Hi Ya
I just updated (big mistake) my Ubuntu to latest version 7.10 and SL started to freeze or actually the OS halts. The previous version worked just fine. The only thing helping is HW boot. And I lost CD- station also, can't mount or eject. Any command to force it to operate?
If I get CD working I will install Xubuntu 6.06 - the lightest version.

Could be a change in the sound card driver setup maybe? Or have you double checked that your graphics card is happily using hardware acceleration? Or is your machine 64bit and have you loaded up the 32bit libraries for it to use?
Things can get tricky after such a large upgrade. I tend to do mine bit by bit so I can keep an eye on what new defaults / applications are doing to the system.

General question - Please help.
Will format HD, No Windows and installing new distro.
Is there any need to load those bios- files as with Windows and if necessary (never done it before with linux) and how is it done?

Yipes! For more general Linux answers you're probably best off browsing Google. In general though, no you don't need to bother with bios / chipset drivers if you stick with the downloaded kernels. Support for *most* oddities is included by default. Of course you may have the motherboard from hell. In which case Google is your friend! http://www.google.com/linuxYou will (probably) need to get the hardware accelerated drivers for your graphics card working though. and you're best off reading and following the instructions from the relevant sites for that (ATI or Nvidia). To run SecondLife .. extract the downloaded client. Go to the directory you just unpacked it all in to. Run the "secondlife" file. Edit: While I think of it ... if this is your first Linux install, it's wise to read up on all the hardware you have while you have a working browser. And don't be panicked unduly, it's easy to dredge up out of date bugs with google that the version you are about to install doesn't suffer from. Best bet is to start reading from the Linux distro website that you've chosen for current supported hardware lists. Good Luck!

I've had the exact same freezes since using ubuntu 7.10. Maybe something to do with graphics drivers I guess. I'm using an acer travelmate with the Intel 950GMA and SL freezes after a few seconds of logging in. Most annoying,.

I am running an HP laptop with Ubuntu 7.10 and the Intel 855GM graphics chipset. I get bad FPS and sometimes scupties are overly simplified. However, it does run. Most important things to check... how much ram do you have? When I only had 512MB SL would not run. The other thing is to make sure that your graphics driver is set up properly for 3d rendering. Can you open a terminal and type the following and then tell us the output?
glxinfo | grep rendering

Just a note: When you do anything drastic to your operating system, you should refresh the proprietary video drivers you're using. They are not an integral part of the distribution; they are written and configured by the chipset manufacturers. Here is a link I found after a five second search for Ubuntu/Kubuntu that describes their recommended method(s) for NVIDIA cards: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/NvidiaAs always, ignore the tags. Linden Labs puts those in there, not me.

Just ditched vista in favor of Ubuntu 7.10 and running the windlight viewer with no problems at all on my 8800GTX, full details and 8xAA everything looks pretty The only issue I am having is SL is not saving my video settings, or my username (It saves my password?) or other settings when i relog.
