I'm afraid you're probably already going as fast as you possibly can on that machine. I'm actually surprised you were able to get in at all!

You are using what is known as a netbook, and not a full laptop. Netbooks were pretty much designed to allow one to check email and browse the web, and maybe do a few other light office-type tasks. The fact that you were able to get into SL on that thing is more a testament to Linux's efficiency compared to Windows than to the power of your device.

Now, as for your memory: You do have the 512MB that was advertised for your device. But because your device is using an integrated graphics chip rather than a full-fledged graphics processor, it does not have its own video memory; so it has to "borrow" from your system memory. In your case, it looks like it's "borrowing" 20MB from your system.

I'd think you'd want to set you graphics settings in SL to as low as possible, the lowest draw distance, no shaders, etc.

To add to that, avoid streaming music or media, and disable voice. the SLVoice client eats up a LOT of CPU time, which you simply cannot afford on a netbook.
