I'm using the new client but it seems to be kind of random as to which sound output device SL selects. Sometimes sound comes out my main system speakers and sometimes it comes out my logitech headset. Is there a switch to select the output device? How does SL pick? I'm using ALSA and/or OSS.

Actually, the default is coming up and using ESD. I'm running Fedora Core 5.

In the ./secondlife startup script you can set some variables to prevent the client from using specific sound devices.

I think all that does is prevent SL from trying different sound protocals. I want to set the sound device to /dev/dsp. By default, SL usually picks /dev/dsp2 for some odd reason. Sometimes it doesn't. For those of us with more than one sound card, we need to be able to specify the output device.

I've played around with system settings defining default sound devices etc. I've defined everything to point to /dev/dsp. All my other applications choose the default sound sound card. Why on earth would the SL client choose the obscure sound device I have installed, /dev/dsp3, my skype headset?

Has anybody ever found a fix for this problem? I have a Plantronics USB headset that I bought for VOIP and it works just fine in all my other Linux apps, and it's set as the default sound device. But the Second Life viewer is the only program on my hard drive that refuses to pipe output to the headset. It continues to use the sound card. It's almost as if the Linux client were hardwired to use any existing sound card rather than a USB headset (by design, so we don't use it till they finally activate SLVoice?). But I don't care about using the mic right now, I just want to pump output into the headset so I don't have to keep switching back and forth.
