I recently switched to an Nvidia 7600 GT OS card from an ATI AIW 2006. Under the ATI card, my resolution choices for fullscreen mode were listed (correctly) as this: 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024
Under the new card, I get these choices: 800x600 832x624 1024x768 1280x800
I do not have a widescreen configuration, so I don't know why these show up. My apsect ratio autodetects (correctly) to 4:3.
Why is this happening?
(PS: I have a 1280x1024 LCD; should I use 5:4, even though that's not autodetected?)

I've been putting SL and my Xorg through some hoops, and I'm at a complete loss as to how SL detects the resolution choices. Can anyone tell me? From that, I can probably work up a fix for this...

From: Jonas Redgrave I've been putting SL and my Xorg through some hoops, and I'm at a complete loss as to how SL detects the resolution choices. Can anyone tell me? From that, I can probably work up a fix for this... SL gets it's resolutions from Xorg, so I'd check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for details.

Same problem and same symptoms here. Using a 1280x1024 LCD screen, with a fullscreen resolution of 1024x768. My data (from debug_info.log): Second Life version 1.14.0 build 0 Can't get terse CPU information RAM: 2126479360 OS: Linux 2.6.20-gentoo #1 PREEMPT Mon Feb 12 12:41:54 CET 2007 i686 GL_VENDOR NVIDIA Corporation GL_RENDERER GeForce 6600 GT/AGP/SSE/3DNOW! GL_VERSION 2.1.0 NVIDIA 97.55 GL_EXTENSIONS: (...long list of extensions...) I'd really love to start the game with full panel support.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but after months of mucking about, I'm still at a loss for how SL detects my resolutions...

I fixed the problem... somewhat. If you open your settings.xml and look for this: From: someone <!--Aspect ratio of fullscreen display (width / height)--> <FullScreenAspectRatio value="1.25"/>
You can paste this under it: From: someone <!--Fullscreen resolution in height--> <FullScreenHeight value="1024"/> <!--Fullscreen resolution in width--> <FullScreenWidth value="1280"/>
I had tried this fix before, and it didn't work. Turns out the Height must be listed before the width. Make sure your FullScreenAspectRatio is 1.25. Now, when you start SL, you will get a fullscreen 1280x1024! BUT, if you open preferences, this breaks the fix, so you have to go back and fix it again. Anyone know how to prevent that? PS: In the meantime, just make a backup of your fixed settings.xml so you can fix your settings when they break.

Is there something similar for the windowed settings?
My screen resolution is 1280x1024 and I'd like to run SL in a 1024x768 window but it defaults to 800x600 and will not give me any other options.
I am able to run it in full screen at 1024x768 with no problems... but I would really like it to be in the window. Is there a way to force it to the resolution I want?
Card is a 7600GT, running Ubuntu 7.04
Thanks in advance.

Ummm one wonders why you'd want full screen mode ... from the known issues:
"* UPLOAD / SAVE / COLOR-PICKER DIALOGS - These only appear when the client is in 'windowed' mode, not 'fullscreen' mode."
And if you do run it in windowed mode and it comes up as 800x600 .. don't you just hit the maximise widget? Works for me!

That works, thanks! ... however the idea was that I wanted a window that didn't take up my whole screen. Right now I seem to be limited to 800x600 (too small) or maximized (too big)... maximized is closer but still not quite perfect. I know that SL is perfectly capable of running in 1024x768 so there must be a way to force it to run in a window of that size...
Thanks though, that's far better than what I had.

From: Wedge Bricklin the idea was that I wanted a window that didn't take up my whole screen. When in windowed mode and not maximized, you should be able to just resize the Second Life window as you would do with any other window. In GNOME and KDE this is done by dragging the edges or corners of the window to the position you want them to be. If you have started SL from a terminal you can even see the resulting window resolution being output there. Note that it doesn't have to match any screen resolution. You can even use SL in a portrait aspect ratio (height > width).
