Even though I spent one-half year studying hands-on Keir Thomas's Beginning Ubuntu, I still am not proficient in the command line and still wander around like a beginner.
I have spent 20 hrs. trying to install the light omvviewer (2D) on my Dell netbook running Hardy Heron and weak on-board graphics. I have installed some pkgs via Synaptic Manager. . . Robin's UK site is really beyond my level.
I am offering L$6500, L$ 3250, one-half, payable in advance in-world, the second half being paid when my app is up and running, for anyone who can walk me through the download, install, and run process step-by-step, ideally with commands I can copy/paste. For those of you who have completed the install, this shouldn't be too difficult for you: I just have to copy what you did. But I will need help: copy/pasting my error messages to you, etc.
I will wait a day or so for responses, then select someone, and close this thread.
I'll pick the person who can lay out the most successful steps (to me), that takes me through half the process successfully. Whoever ends up doing this whole process successfully, could end up with a postable wiki, so you'd have served a second function by default.

This took some crazy doing, since only parts of mono seem to be installed by default. So, we need to get the required files. From terminal, type sudo apt-get install mono-utils libmono-winforms2.0-cilapt-get will identify a couple of required dependencies. Allow them to install. Next, download the omvviewer zip file: cd ~/ wget http://omvviewer-light.byteme.org.uk/downloads/omvviewerlight_0_48_0_6.zip (without the tags, of course) Navigate to your home directory, find the ZIP file you just downloaded, and extract it to your home directory. Finally, launch the program: mono ~/omvviewerlight_0_48_0_6/omvviewerlight.exeThis should get you on your way.

Interesting... I didn't realize Dell Netbooks had their own Ubuntu repository.
At any rate, I just tried that URL that didn't resolve for you, and it opened to a standard Apache directory navigation page for me. It might have been down when you tried, so please try it again.
If it continues to give you problems, then you might have something wrong with your sources list.
Edit: I did some exploring, and found that Ubuntu has indeed created a new "lpia" architecture specifically for netbooks which is code-compatible with the i386 architecture, but uses low-power optimizations. If you are still having trouble pulling down the required packages I listed earlier, let me know, and I'll try to dig up paths to the i386 .deb packages that you can install directly.

Katheryne Helendale = Success!

Thank you! Thank you! All commands went in as smooth as glass. Yes, the dell/canonical server must have been down: it did resolve. I guess I should have followed my own rule: 50% percent of computer errors can be solved just by repeating the process . . . I didn't realize that Dell and Canonical were working so closely together. Please give me your SL name. I do hope you'll accept payment, since that was my offer
