When did you file this support request? If it was very recently, please forward this mail and the answer to Torley ... She can then pass the info on to Michael Linden, educating him of the Alpha version.

Very sad ...

Original Request
05-31-2006 01:30
The original support request was filed last night.

I think we should start a petition for a stable SL client for linux. They almost have it with the alpha client, just a little more work it they could have it fixed up in no time.

We want SL....WE WANT SL!!!!

As one J.Maguire once said ...."who's with me?"

Ah, right, Martin Linden, I missed the signature.

However, still very poor. We definitely should pass on this information, so Lindens get informed about the alpha client. Even though it may be not in the official portfolio yet, they should at least direct people to the appropriate download page.

I think I'll forward a reference to this thread now.

Edit: Forwarded to Torley. Karen and Don chose not to receive PMs, so I hope it will get passed on.

I'd like to point out the "Linux Client (Alpha)" download link on the main SL downloads page. I think that pretty much says the Linux client is official.

And that link's been up there for weeks now, I have no clue why Martin Linden didn't mention it.

Maybe Martin was speaking of the next release. There is apparently no 1.10.1.0 for Linux.

Maybe Martin Linden should clarify what he meant ....

I challenge the Lindens to release to source-code of the linux 'Alpha' client to the community, who will fix the problems in about 1 day.

I am not asking for 'open source' or GPL, but there are thousands of users who run linux and want to be second life residents.

Its not lke a resident pays for his client, whatever the OS, so c'mon fix it or release it.

Linux Users want to live in SL too you know.

LOL .. If the linux community was that badass in game work WorldForge would have gone somewhere.

Why is it the OpenSource community always has people claiming these sort of things when they have yet to prove any of it with large scale projects. Have we become nothing but beggers asking for the rights to other peoples source so we can play with it? Nevrax, Mozilla, OpenOffice, etc.. Please stop, its insulting. (Yes I am painfully familiar with the kernel, glibc, etc.. and I have code in it, but you know what .. these are ground-up projects, not begger projects).

You are beginning to get on my nerves....little man.

You seem to be in the wrong forum my freind, here we are mainly linux users and programmers, unlike yourself who was probably (pure speculation mind you) Mr Torvalds personal dog groomer, who while you were there picked up a few words beginning with 'G' in order to try and fake a career in REAL Information Technology.

By the sounds of it you don't support linux, so I am guessing you couldn't cut it in the world of 'C(++)' and perl, so moved over to VB and the like.

You bore me....stop following me round the forums. (unless you have something positive to say with regards to getting a working linux client).

If I could get in-world right now, it would be nice to discuss this in more detail 'face-to-face' as it were, BUT I CAN'T AS THERE IS NO LINUX CLIENT.

So we discuss in front of all these nice people. Hmmmm

LOL, if it comforts you to think of me as such then sure. I said what I said because more often then not it tends to be the truth, from a Linux developers point of view. One of the quotes I used on another thread was from Paul Mundt, a good friend of mine, you should maybe go look up his name in the Linux Kernel :) Not that such things are evidence either way, but if you are crafty you can likely find my name in there as well, though not as previlant as his. I enjoy Linux just fine, and it has been all I have had installed for .. hmm close to 14 years now. Its the fanatics that drive me crazy, as I have said. They are often the ones preaching the most and doing the least. To quote paul again:

"The most vocal fanatics are usually the ones writing the least amount of code. It's hard to consider them credible or to really give a damn either way. -- Paul Mundt"

So far as something positive to say, I think I said it already. Your approach shows a lack of experience in dealing with working on opensource projects, especially in regards to working with companies. I am not attempting to belittle anyone, and if the Linux SL community where really willing to put forth the effort to DO any work, then more power to them. But so far all that seems to have been does is toss insults at Linden Lab's for not releasing the source and not focusing enough on the linux client. I could be wrong of corse, there might be some odd postings I have seen hidden somewhere in the dark corners of the forums, but if they are then no one stepped up to the plate and pushed to get them through and take care of the Linux situation. In that regards, there is no one to blame but the community's lack of innovation in dealing with the situation.

And incase you missed it .. Open Source developers who actually code tend to be pretty much blunt bastards with little care for padding peoples realities. ;) If we weren't, lkml and linuxnet would get pretty damn dull.

Anyway Major, the debates been interesting. (or something vaguely like that).

Its of no consequence - NEW LINUX CLIENT IS OUT. On the downloads page.

And for the record - I am as blunt as they come. But you wouldn't want me to be two-faced aswell would you.

Looking forward to seeing you in-world, wouldn't mind hooking up on a couple of LSL ideas I have would you?

....no really I am serious!

I am not a programmer (IANAP), but I agree. A lot of fanatical Linux Proponents ARE "free riders".

I love Linux because it is powerful and flexible.

I know it doesn't always work right, and if it's possible, I let the developers know.

I am also not THAT able to fill out an entire bugzilla page!

I prefer Linux, and am devoted to it. I think Windows is not even close to it. But I use Windows, and am quite prepared to accept that it has a superior finish.

My contribution to Linux is getting it used,. helping people with it, reporting bugs, and so on. Ground swell stuff. And if my IT colleagues will listen, warning them that Linux IS going to be everywhere, so get with it :D

My experience is, that people who are actively building Linux (GNU/Linux), either by getting it more used, mor accepted, or more technically advanced, are not fanatical, but dedicated. And the developers are understandably short of patience with freeloaders... I just wish that a bit more was done to get linux more "Intuitive" for the Average Non Dedicated PC user, though it is coming along!
