Most of the fonts are unreadable. They appear like black blocks. Once selected become readable, but that is not always possible.

Kubuntu Dapper works for me... which isn't to negate what you're saying, but rather to point out that its not happening to all Kubuntu Dapper Drake users.
I keep meaning to upgrade to Edgy Eft, but I had some problems the first week of Eft's release and just never got around to trying again.

Another data point: fonts work fine here; system is an up-to-date Dapper installation (relatively standard, though I do have several font packages installed for supplementary fonts).
