Thinking about buying a new vid card.

XFX GeForce 9800 GT - 512MB GDDR3, PCI Express 2.0, (2) Dual Link DVI, HDTV, VGA Support

My Os will be Suse linux. (opensuse.org)

Anyone have a reason why I shouldn't buy this card? Seems like a good deal for the price. ($140 CDN after rebate)

Thanks for any opinions about this card + linux + SL.

That should be a good card for Second Life, and that's a reasonable price for it. South of the border those are about US$100 (often after rebates) but you're getting hit up for GST and CAD$1 is only worth about US$0.83 at the moment so you're really paying about the same amount as we are.

For a long time the NVidia 8800 was the best card for SL and the 9800 is its successor (newer technology so less expensive for them to manufacture, same performance for SL but you get some extra features for HD video decoding). The new GTX 260 and GTX 280 cards are even faster but cost significantly more, and they're approaching the overkill point for Second Life anyway.

Thanks for responding to my message.

But I already went ahead and bought it...lol.. couldn't wait.

The card came in today with a bare bones system I also bought to support the card.

I'm happy to say that the card & SL does work under my preferred flavor of Linux.

Suse Linux rocks!

I'll make another thread and detail how the Suse install went.

I'm using an XFX 9800GTX+ and it is running very smooth on ubuntu with E17. I can't see any reason for anyone not o use a card like that.Nvidia has the binary drivers on thier site and ubuntu has the debian packages already installed just need to be downloaded. pretty straight forward.

my single 9800GTX plus out performs my buddies GTX280 on the 3df mark so IDK if it is really that much faster.

I have the 9800 GTX+ as well. Seems like a good card, though I did have "stuck" conditions at the beginning.

I have had these before; I set the video memory in SL to 256 instead of the full 512 my card has, and though I can't swear this was the cause, SL runs perfectly now (except for occasional TP disconnects).

Runs very cool, though it needs a power supply of 500 Watts or more (I bought one) because it can draw LOTS of 12V amps.

And in reviews I have also seen that OpenGL is fastest on this card, faster even in some cases than the 200 series.

For me, a GREAT card almost made for SL :)
