Would it be possible if someone could create a bootable CD with whatever distro of Linux on it, loads in all whatever appropriate drivers that are detected during the boot, and then automatically launches the Second Life view, and then sits and waits for a login. No desktop, no other apps, just Second Life.

I'm sure this is doable, but I'm too much of a linux noob to know how to do that.

Would be a great way for nearly everyone to test the Linux client with out having to install linux on their system, since all they would need to do is pop a CD in and reboot. :)

It is possible...the libraries and such are easy to throw on there, and it's just a matter of editing a current livecd. The only problem might be the drivers...ATi's and nVidia's work different and don't really coexist, so it might take some fiddling with to get to work. With SL's update schedule though, would it be worth it? It'd be neat for a demo, but doesn't seem to practical without some form of offline entertainment for it, like a personal sim (which isn't possible yet).

Live CD to ByPass MS O/S

Just got here and am still comming up to speed. But already I see a *big* problem for me among others - the necessity to initiate the session under Win XP. No got! I stopped at 98SE and I don't think that works in SL.

With a live CD one could bypass the MS problem.

Nice but nVidia only eh? That limits me on to what machines I can run this on. The machine I want to use this on has an ATI card. I'm a complete Linux noob and while I know how to use Linux using whatever is already pre-installed from install CD/DVD, installing apps leaves me completely lost. I can't find any instructions on how to install SL on a kubuntu system I just setup. How do drivers get installed? nothing makes any sense.

Also any 64bit version of Linux I've ever used never worked on my AMD 64.. I guess it doesn't like my PCIe video card.

NVidia only, alas, until I build a new CD for ATI, or a universal CD.

I'm writing about installing SL in Kubuntu in the Metaverse Messenger (www.metaversemessenger.com). I just sent up the latest article, and I'll have a followup tweak to it next week.

On your AMD 64 woes: What processor chip is your AMD?

Ah to bad the grid is down, or I'd be checking out this live CD on my nVidia machine. Perhaps I'll install Knoppix instead of kubuntu on my other rig.. see if I can install ATI drivers and install SL on it. Or figure out how to make my login "super user" so I can acctually install ATI drivers on Kubuntu. This LIVE CD only goes 1024x786 and looks horrible, but the SL viewer did launch but it wasn't automatic as I thought it would be. Desktop still comes up. Sorry if spelling is bad.. no spell check on FF off this live CD.

Or simply

$ sudo -s

For a root shell. Better yet,

$ sudo command

for a one or two time use like installing drivers. I only take root shell when I'm doing a lot of maintenance.
