Maybe this gives SecondLife with WINE boost?

As far as my usage goes, no noticeable SL-related differences from 0.9.12 to 0.9.13.

I get somewhat "better" sound from the new setup. It occassonally blows out with an underrun, but sometimes fixes that.

I switch to wine / cedega every now and then for uploads and scripting, and I can definitely recommend giving it a try. SL runs nicely on wine, albeit crashing easily when in largely populated areas.

SL doesn't use Direct3D so those changes will make no difference (plus a lot of the "fixes" are in fact not fixes at all but architectural work laying the foundations for future support)

Second Life doesn't habitually use D3D, strictly speaking. At (first) startup it uses D3D to probe the hardware's capabilities to set its defaults better, but beyond that point it uses OpenGL exclusively.

deactivate D3D probe on startup?
05-20-2006 10:10
Is there a way to de-activate the D3D/DirectX probe when SL starts up?

I'm using WINE on Ubuntu Breezy, and after SL installed OK I tried to run it but get the following error messages.

Terminal messages:

Appreciate any advice/solutions,

Cheers

AFAIK no, but it should work properly the second time you start it.

secondlife.exe command line switches
05-21-2006 00:09
Here's a link containing a list of command line switches for the SecondLife.exe

http://secondlife.com/badgeo/wakka.php?wakka=newview

Unfortunately the -noprobe and -ignorepixeldepth switches both failed to resolve my issue.

I'm starting to think it's related to my widescreen laptop resolution of 1280x800, although the error still occurs when it's set to 1024x768, it's still a 'gut feel'.

Wine is fine :D but Transparency is not so good. Alpha channels are not working under wine, and I think it is simply missing from the windows client. This is by the way a great way to see how exact or messy a clothing maker was :p

Sound sometimes has hiccups, it seems to be OK if the sound is set via winecfg to ALSA, emulate and emulate, on the sound tab.

About the Directx probe failing when starting under wine: it should be able to be ignored, it is not a reason SL would not start. It always comes up, and fails, when SL starts under wine.

If it is failing because of this, there is probably a different underlying cause, I would think.

It's failing because the DirectX Diagnostics DLL is mostly incomplete. We will fix it eventually.

From what I've understand and have used in graphics programming OpenGL is a graphics API only, it doesn't have any built-in support for an audio API, unless of course SL uses OpenAL for that. Ogg/Vorbis is supported on both API's by the way.

I have also run games that support both D3D and OpenGL so it is possible for SL to support both API's its just more coding/testing.

SL uses FMOD as audio engine. There is a Linux version of FMOD available, it just has he be licenced.
