I just recently did a full system overhaul and made Ubuntu 8.10 my primary OS (oh the joys of that xorg.conf file), and everything is going great, except my SL. SL is very slow, and i am using the standard linux viewer client with Multiple threads activated in the Advanced menu. I have an ATI video card, and im using the proper drivers with fglx etc, all installed/active. I also installed Google Earth which tells you if 3D acceleration is not working - and I received no such message.
I installed Ubuntu first, and then Vista 2nd, so the Ubuntu OS loader screen is displayed, not the Windows Boot selector screen, and someone in the Ubuntu SL group mentioned that it might be the cause, but I do not see how.
The only big change i have done is the xorg.conf file because there is no way to get proper Windows like dual monitor support without editing that file.
My System is a Dual Core 3.0ghz, 3gb ram, 320gig HD, ATI HD 2600XT video card.
Are there any ideas why SL is running slow for me in Ubuntu?

With a lot of cards, dual monitor support is known to reduce 3D performance, I believe. What happens when you try with your original xorg.conf? (Of course it would be nice to run SL dualscreen, but the workload might just be too much for the card)

Unfortunately I have heard others describing problems such as this with ATI cards. I know there was an issue such as this, that affected versions 1.21 of the viewer in windows, and the current RC (1.22) is reported to have fixed it, hopefully the fix carry's over into linux.
I really hope this works for you, hopefully someone else can spare a moment to help?, with an ATI card.
