I have just installed OpenGEU and tried to install and run Secondlife.

I have downloaded and extracted the files but I am blowed if I can launch the programme!

What do I need to do to launch SL in Linux? Or am I condemned to life in Windows!?

Thanks for your help guys!

It might be helpful to provide some information about your hardware and operating system. For example, is/are your processor(s) 64-bit? If so, you may need to install some 32-bit emulation. What kind of video are you using? If you don't have the proper drivers installed for your video card, SL will not run.

OpenGEU is new to me and I had to look it up. It looks like it uses a desktop called Enlightenment, which hasn't been tested with SL. SL has only been tested with KDE and Gnome.

You may be missing a lot. I use OpenSUSE 10.3 and SL runs beautifully. OpenGEU is virgin territory and you are the virgin. :-)

Three PCs. Three different Linux distros. None work.

Well I am a Linux newb but got it running just fine in Ubuntu. Only change I had to make was install the 3D drivers as the stock install only installed 2D drivers.

All I did was download the linux client to desktop, extract it to desktop, open the folder, double click on secondlife and and choose run or run in terminal and off it goes.

I'm not a new Linux user--and thought what you did would indeed work for me, too. It certainly should, but does not.

However, I am pleased you've had success. I've given up. I use Linux for almost everything but SL. With SL, it seems I must pay the Microsoft tax to play. :(

In order to help, we need details:

What distros on what kinds of pc's What video card? What drivers loaded for said video card?

Internet connection: proxies, wireless, speed, etc.

Exactly what happens when you click the sl icon? On which pc? Does it not start up, or does it not connect, or does it crash, or. . . ?

Don't write off Linux before we actually have a chance to see what the problem really is.

Not dropping Linux, just SL on Linux.
03-02-2008 17:58
I've certainly not written off Linux, just SL on Linux.

However, with today's SL problems and the money I've lost, I'm dropping my paid SL membership. SL management is clearly incompetent both technically and managerially. Nor do they seem to care about residents' welfare. LL obviously cares only for itself.

But, thanks for your offer to help. I'm not at all a Linux noob. There are 4 PCs here with a distro of some variant on each. All work fine with everything but SL.

and you still don't reply the basic question:

What is wrong? any error message ?

ZenWarrior,

With out trying to push my own agenda again :-

If any of your distros are Debian or Ubuntu have you tried my debs? They should *just* work out of the box and pull in any required dependencies.

And also, in any case, please run secondlfie from a terminal or check the results of ~/.secondlife/logs/secondlife.log if it goes wrong it provides valuable clues to a secondlife failure (of either the linden native or other peoples builds of the viewers)

Oh.. i AM a noob.. using Debian for some years now .. DO have SL running on my box .... yet i find you state lotsa truths here...

But still .. here (in this thread) are helpful linux - users .. try being more specific about the errors you encounter.. as far as I can tell you do not have proper graphics driver installed ... do these systems run 3D apps ? Any ? You get anything on 'glxinfo' in your terminal ?

SL on Enlightenment / XFCE4
03-05-2008 14:50
Although SL was only really tested on KDE and gnome, I can testify here that SL runs perfectly in:

- XFCE4, even with Compiz-fusion running on top of that
- Enlightenment E17

In both WM's SL runs even much faster than on KDE/gnome.
So no worries about the WM here.

FYI: I am using Debian Sid (Sidux live-CD install) with an nvidia graphics card Geforce 4 and with the original (binary) nvidia drivers. SL will not run with the native NV-drivers supplied with some distros.

Don't blame the Lindens immediately if you don't get SL running on your machine. There are lots of people here who succesfully got SL running on several PC-configs and several distros and as you see several WM's. So just give more details so we can help you out. I am sure it will be possible to get SL running on Linux as many have proved already.

I came here hoping my question would already be answered, but since the guy never actually said what was wrong I guess not.. however I am new to Linux, and can't quite figure out how to start it. From the sound of it, just following what the readme says would get it to run..however, i'm getting a warning saying that the secondlife:// handler with KDE does not exist (i'm using GNOME) and it's also saying:
./secondlife: line 100: bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: No such file or directory

I must've done something wrong, but since the readme gives no instruction outside of typing the command and saying there's no need for installation, i'm kinda confused.. I'm pretty sure it's a simple fix, too.

EDIT-
Okay nevermind, I found the deb package and it works okay now. However, I'm still curious what I had done wrong by doing it the original way and how I could go about doing it the right way when I find other stuff to install. Thanks in advance!

I would not worry too much about that at the moment. All that does is give you the ability to go to a webpage that has a secondlife:// link eg a landmark and it can start the viewer for you and set your landing point.

As for running secondlife from the linden tar balls you should only need to download and unpack, then go into the folder and click on the secondlife icon. It sounds like you did not unpack completely or have unpacked with out a folder structure. In gnome a right click on the tar,gz and extract here should be enough then open the folder and click to run.

There is no installing to be done with the linden distribution of secondlife on linux its all self contained, which is actually very unusual for linux so don't expect this to be the norm for other packages but does mean that almost everything you need comes with the package.
