Hi Jimmio.
I assume you downloaded SecondLife_i686_1_12_3_6.tar.bz2 from the http://secondlife.com/community/linux-alpha.php page. That file is a compressed archive, so you have to extract it somewhere in order to obtain a SecondLife_i686_1_12_3_6 directory. You may do this in two ways: using a graphical app (unfortunately I'm not used to Gnome) or from the command line (in a terminal, use the cd command to get into the directory in which you downloaded the SecondLife_i686_1_12_3_6.tar.bz2 file, then type tar xjf SecondLife_i686_1_12_3_6.tar.bz2 This should create the SecondLife_i686_1_12_3_6 directory, which contains a secondlife file. This file is the script you need to execute to start Second Life. Again, you can do this by using your graphical interface (a double click on the secondlife file icon should work; don't keep clicking it, the application could take many seconds to start) or in a terminal (enter in the SecondLife_i686_1_12_3_6 directory using cd command, then type secondlife then enter). If you have other problems please describe the issue with details. Bye ![]() Note that you don't need to be root in order to get Second Life working. |

Suse has been subverted

Could someone please help me in opening second life? Thanks. Please consider using a different Linux distro. Suse/Novell has succumbed to Microsoft's divide-and-conquer strategy. |

SUsE has problems
12-02-2006 09:07
I have had so very many problems with SUsE Linux that I junked it last week and installed Ubuntu. I choose Ubuntu because when I first looked for help in this forum it seemed to be the dominant distro. and one or two other people recommended it for a non-linux person. If anyone is interested I can report more on how I like it later.
SUsE never worked well for me. It was horribly unstable in every aspect of usage. Graphics would fail at every logout, programs wouldn't run properly (not just SL), and after one upgrade from SL it would just freeze my screen for everything. How much of this was SUsE, and how much is just my status as a user vs. an administrator who might know how to configure it I have no way to know. It doesn't matter. One should not have to be a systems administrator in order to simply use their computer. We spend years mastering our chosen fields of profession, we cannot let our leisure time (so very few minuets of it) be stolen by having to learn another. If it is ones hobby that is fine... if it is not it is simply a serious frustration stealing time from an already crowded life. I'm trying hard to dump windows, very hard, because of these kinds of problems. SUsE made them far worse. Ubuntu is somewhere in between the two right now, but shows promise so I will stick with it for a short time. In the end I may have no choice but to spend a lot of money I don't have for a MAC... I would rather not have to make that choice, especially since there is no guaranty that that would change the situation. For now, I would suggest seeking some advice from those you would trust or who might offer you some system support on a different version/distribution of Linux. It won't solve all the problems, but it may make them easier to deal with. --Saturnine |
