Awesome! I like playing with blender, more for video/animation, but it's great news, another open source application which can be used for SL creators.

More of interest to me in that blog was the section above it about Reuben Stein reverse engineering the SL protocol, and the fact of Phoenix Linden saying Linden Labs fully supported it as long as it was "good natured". Awesome! :D
