Sorry, but I see all the "it's borked" messages, and just had to add my own counter point. I'm on Debian testing... not totally up to date, but fairly cutting edge. Nvidia 6200 256mb card, running KDE and XFCE. And... It's bitchin! Only one crash in two days and that's because I hit a bad sector on the HD Ok so it's bad HD news... but SL using the most recent FL client is smooth as Beyonce's bum after a good photoshop session. How? All I had to do to avoid crash hell was install the "locales-all" package with apt. Since then? I'm more stable than my windows friends I'm also running OSS native (recompiled the kernel). I know ALSA is buggy for SL. If anyone wants to quiz me on specific versions of libs I'm running... fire away! But I'm the happy "yay it works, thanks LL" dude in the corner

I'd also like to report that First Look is running perfectly for me now, the latest one is very stable for me. My config is Debian unstable with an ATI X700 graphics card.
Some things that I've done to resolve problems that may help others...
Add 'en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8' to '/etc/locale.gen' and run locale_gen as root
Use version 8.28.8 of the ATI driver package, versions after that seem to make SL grind to a halt after a few minutes.
Comment out this option in my xorg.conf: Option "DesktopSetup" "horizontal"
For some reason that I've not worked out, that causes some OpenGL apps to either not run or become really unstable.
Add this to the fglrx section of my xorg.conf: Option "KernelModuleParm" "locked-userpages=0"
Comment out 'export LL_GL_BASICEXT=x' in the secondlife startup script, my setup doesn't seem to need it if I do all the other things.
Don't enable VBO in the SL client, if I do it runs pretty well for about 2 minutes then grinds to a halt. If I can uncheck VBO before the fps hits 1 then it'll go back to normal.
And that's about it, performance isn't as good as the Windows version on the same hardware, but I suspect that it's down to the ATI driver rather than any difference in the SL client. Although that could be due to the VBO thing as I can enable that under Windows.
Hope that's of some use to someone

SL on Debian (stable) rocks!

I was having a problem with lagging and crashing. Everyone said it was sl. I was crashing at the most every 20 min and could hardly move around, the lag was so bad. I bought 2 gigs of ram coming from 512 mb. I havn't crashed or lagged in a week. I have an issue with FirstLook 59668 not displaying my "shine" textures. What is this? Well, I'm back using the 1_13_3_2, and just the same - SL rocks on Debian (stable)! Just a note, my sl friend made a "can of whop ass" thats making headlines. From: Roxanne Rexroth I have an issue with FirstLook 59668 not displaying my "shine" textures. What is this? This is covered in the README - see 'problem 3' in the 'known issues' section.
