That's it. Lindens say throw away my computer

The latest Linux upgrade now prevents me from logging on with the 18.2.1 client, which is the only one that has worked on my 3 year old computer for months. 18.2.1 worked fine but for some reason the Lindens want me to run Windows or buy a new computer??

This stinks.

Tell us about your computer. Mine is older than that and works great.

you might want to check out the 3rd party Linux viewers Nickolaz references in this blog posting:

The Nicholaz viewer ignores mandatory upgrade requirements, perhaps one or all of these do as well.

a simple --channel=whatever you want will bypass the mandatory upgrade...

Two laptops killed by this, both IBM Thinkpads (R51, T42P). They both have 1.5G to 2G memory and 1.8G to 2G Intel processor. Both have some version of ATI Radeon graphics hardware that SL, in both Linux and Windoze, says is to old. The only system it works on now is a work system. I can't justify using that to play a game.

18.2.1 had its limitations but allowed me to do what I wanted. A new computer is just not in the budget now. And, a policy if withdrawing hardware support like this makes me doubt that anything I bought now will continue to be supported. I'm just not going to throw out my computer every three years.

I'll try the 3rd party viewer you mentioned. Thanks for the suggestion. It looks like this will be the end of this game for me if I can't get that to work.

hmmm seems the t42 works on Windoze. The R51 fails on both Windoze and Linux.

Where do I put that --channel=whatever? I tried adding this to the secondlife script on Linux:
export CHANNEL=5440

It didn't change the behavior.

Try an alternative viewer like slviewer:

Add it to the command line ./secondlife -channel "i'm not upgrading"

or you may put it in gridargs.dat file

Sacha and Johnnie: Thanks much. The -channel "noupgrade" flag worked great and my old lame computer is now working as well as it ever did with that out-of-date viewer. Now, as long as Mabel down at the switchboard doesn't stop supporting my DSL party line, I should be good.

Thanks all!

Did folks try testing the 1.19.0 client? What requirements are they complaining about?

The only issues with continuing to use a legacy viewer is there are protocol changes which will be phased out of future releases of the server and services (ie inventory). This will eventually sunset the client, with or without the "--channel" argument.
