I'm on the newest release candidate using the Cool viewer (I don't think the Cool viewer has much if anything to do with this issue). My voice was working, but would stop and put me in my own private chat channel anytime the people in the Active Speakers box would change. I'd read in JIRA about people using the older libopenal.so.1 and getting it working.

I found a copy and tried it and it seemed like it wasn't picking up the right device, so I created a .asoundrc in my home directory to set the default card (I only have one, but I guess ALSA is picky!). To pick your card:
cat /proc/asound/cards

Mine displays:
0 [Live ]: EMU10K1 - SB Live 5.1 Dell OEM [SB0220]
SB Live 5.1 Dell OEM [SB0220] (rev.10, serial:0x80661102) at 0x9f00, irq 17

I've read that if you have multiple cards that number in the beginning can change so it's best to use what is in the [ ] to set the default.

So, my .asoundrc looks like:
pcm.!default {
type hw
card Live
}
ctl.!default{
type hw
card Live
}

Probably this has come up before, but I couldn't find it. I know that a ton of people are using Pulse audio, but I was thinking there may be one or two out there like me using something else :)

Old libopenal.so.1 from 1.19.0.5:

Hi

I'm one of those that tends to use some else then the majority :)

Runnung Ubuntu 8.10 with a SB Live 5.1 soundcard.
Latest alsa installed as described in the SL-voice readme file.

I added the line of text that you posted into the rc file and now i can see other voice users to.
Howerver i can see them and talk to them for a short amount of time, +/- 2 minutes.
After that time the others dissapear from the voice list, without them comming back.

i made a fresh SL log and found some that looked funny

Paste from log

2009-02-09T16:47:19Z WARNING: checkCircuitTimeout: LLCircuitData::checkCircuitTimeout for 8.4.128.167:13002 last ping 100.539 seconds ago.
2009-02-09T16:47:19Z WARNING: checkCircuitTimeout: LLCircuitData::checkCircuitTimeout for 8.4.128.167:13002 still dead, dropping.

End paste

Seems to me the checking back fails, and that ends the sound ability
Only wish i had a idea to fix this.

they had voice server problems yesterday... i had the same issues getting dumped off like that yesterday on my Mac, which always works fine with voice... I don't think it was your set up.

Hmm, i missed the message about problems with the voice server.
Anyway, i switched to the SLim client now, and that one seems to do the trick for me.
