The only time I get sound is when I use OSS, The client claims that ALSA starts up okay, but no sound. When I set it to use ESD, there's some sort of error (it doesn't tell me which one). The sound module I am using is snd-hda-intel. When I use OSS the sound is choppy. Ithink this may be the problem, but I have no Idea what it means:

Esd, Oss, Alsa ???

Hi,
I have a sound problem as well, it looks like the problem you are describing, but ... - When using ESD, sometimes no sound. Log out and back in, sound works again. - When using OSS, no sound, same error as you have in the log. - When using ALSA, no sound, no error. Sound in Linux for other applications (gxine, amarok, firefox, etc.) works like a charm. Hope anyone can shed a light on this problem. Thanks, Marcoh Larsen. |

I had some problems when i used libesd-alsa0, but they went away after i switched to libesd0.
My alsa driver is v 1.0.14rc1, compiled from source, cause otherwise it wouldnt play nice with my 2.6.19 kernel. Did you try to run "alsaconf" yet? maybe some mixer settings or whatever arent right. |

Yeah, I ran alsaconf. I ran that when I first installed linux and had problems. It solved those ones. "Those ones" being that all sound was choppy on the machine. I'll try running it again. And the only way I got sound at all was to use alsa's oss emulator

Maybe outdated RPMs are my problem, I'll try that and compiling when I get back on my linux box. _____________________

Are you using the native Kernel ALSA drivers or the drivers that ALSA has externally?
I'm using the 2.6.19.2 native drivers on snd-hda-intel and not having any problems. The kernel driver must be evolving, because between 2.6.18.5 and 2.6.19.2 I now have a dedicated PCM mixer. Now only if X11 wouldn't crash when I close the lid... _____________________

Personally i use the ALSA driver from here:
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/alsa/snapshot/driver/ cause it seems to be newer than the natve kernel driver - and i like new things ^^; SL uses esd for me and libesd0 v 2.36-3 seems to work just fine here. If youre using .Deb files, you can get a precompiled package here: http://packages.debian.org/unstable/libs/libesd0 -Asriazh |

I found something even more weird. If I run as root, sometimes ESD will start up just fine o.0. There really is no pattern. But never as a normal user. And I couldn't find libesd :/ not with urpmi. A google search revealed packages for other distros though.
When I do get ESD running, the sound is PERFECT. Even when the rest of the client laaags to death. _____________________

ESD sound works again under normal user
01-19-2007 00:00
Aster,
I tried to run as root and I also got ESD-sound running (without changing anything to the config). If I try now as my normal user, the ESD sounds also works. It seems that you have to try ESD as root for at least one time and after that ESD also works for other users. Don how, but it works. Marcoh |

I just wish they could use a non-deprecated sound driver like ALSA. In fact that's what they SHOULD be using... But that's just my opinion.
