Go to the directory you unpacked the .tar.bz2 to, go to the directory it created, and run ./secondlife

(Unless there's a specific Ubuntu installer-wrapper, then you just might have to run 'secondlife' from anywhere because it's in your $PATH)

It's a .zip file? It should be a .tar.bz2 file. What's it called?

Once you unpack the tarball, go into the directory unpacking it created, then run ./secondlife

If you're not sure what I said, bribe your local Linux user with microbrew and snacks for a quick crash course on the basics.

The zipfile contains the windows version. You should have gotten a tarball of some sort (.tar.bz2 or .tar.gz).

If you use Gnome as your desktop environment, you should be able to doubleclick on that file to open the tarball, then drag the folder it contains someplace like your home directory or desktop. From there, go into the folder you just unpacked, and double click on the "secondlife" file there.

Another possibility is you can Google for OMVViewer; that has packages for Debian and Ubuntu (but does not include voice support at this time). OMVViewer is just the open source portions of the SL viewer (the name Second Life is not redistributable, hence the name change; this is the same situation that Iceweasel is in with Firefox; the name Firefox is not redistributable).

If you're still not sure what we're talking about, bribe a local Linux user with microbrews and snacks to show you the basics. Note that most Linux users are not compatible with watery macrobrews like PBR, Coors, Miller, Mikelob, etc.; dark macrobrews such as Guinness may be compatible. When in doubt, consult your Linux user prior to installing beer.

Yeah, I don't go in for any of this Ubuntu, Gnome desktop stuff. Maybe there's a tidy, Ubuntu-specific way to do it, but I don't know about it :p

I'm going to assume you have it downloaded to your home directory. I realize this isn't a solid assumption (my stuff goes to ~/incoming, for example), or can at least figure out where you put it and how to get it to your home directory.

Open a shell.
Do this:
cd
tar -xjf SecondLife-i686-1.21.6.99587.tar.bz2
cd SecondLife[tab] (hit tab, don't type tab...it should autocomplete the directory name or give you options if there are more than one)
./secondlife

And it should start! if 'tar' fails, the file is somewhere else, so you'll have to figure out where your default download location is and get the file into home directory.

In ubuntu, just right click on the downloaded file and Select "unpack here"

you'll then have a folder named the same thing, you can go in that folder and double click the file called "secondlife" and hit Run on the question asking if you really wanna run it...

thats all there is to it

you could move it other places or make shortcuts and stuff, but thats all a bit more than basic info

Also, if your running an ATI video card, and SL flickers badly, you need to turn off all the screen efects (Compiz) so SL will run flicker free. There is a program you can search for and find called Compiz Switch that will give you a litle toggle button you can turn it on and off with. Nvidia cards are much better choice for Linux.
