I wanted to give you guys forewarning...
We're having the developers spend a little extra time on the Linux releases for 1.11 and 1.12 Preview. Unfortunately, I don't have a version to post for the Previews in the meantime, so the Linux download links are currently unavailable.
We do want to release Linux builds at the same time as Windows/Mac releases; unfortunately, a late issue cropped up with the Linux build, and we didn't want to delay the Previews and miss out on a long weekend of resident bug reporting (and feedback!) Thankfully, subsequent releases for 1.11 and 1.12 shouldn't have similar delays.
We'll get the Linux Preview builds up as quickly as possible.

I think we're probably all thrilled with the improved level of communication taking place. Thanks, Lee!

Thanks for letting us know, Lee! We appreciate the time and effort going into the Alpha client! Of course we would not want you to delay the other builds, we'll eagerly await the Linux version and have a sip of WINE in the meantime

Thanks, Lee. I may only be a week old in my Second Life, but I've been chagrined to find some faults with the client.
Currently, my big issue is that my fonts are rendered in an unreadable fashion. To get around this, I have to launch a separate X.org instance and run SL under it.
Do we have a "bugzilla" style bug reporting system?

I'm guessing you normally run Xgl, right? Xgl still has, uh, issues. If so, hard to blame SL for faults in your X server, but that said maybe there's a workaround anyway...

There *IS* a workaround, but it's ugly: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=176636Hope this helps... not useful enough for me to use Xgl yet.

Thanks! That worked nicely. (Well, I don't have window decorations, but it's far more usable than being "locked" into a separate X session.)

I know this is not usual LL policy, but do we have an ETA on the preview (<3 1.12)? Even knowing what the issue with the Linux build would be nice

The LL offices have been closed all week so far because of the US holiday - that hasn't helped speed things up.

*bump*
Any news? What kind of issue do you have with the preview anyway? Will it affect the "final" alpha?

Indeed! Thanks for the pointer! With 1.12 up, it shouldn't be too long for 1.11 to come up, too

1.12.0.1 corrupt?
07-06-2006 17:51
I tried to extract the 1.12.0.1 preview and it did the following: bzip2: Data integrity error when decompressing. Input file = (stdin), output file = (stdout)
I've downloaded it twice and tried to manually bunzip2 it and I get the same error.
Has anyone else been able to get it untared?

I'm getting this error when I try to uncompress the 1.12 preview:
SecondLife_1_12_0_1/character/avatar_upper_body_4.llm tar: Skipping to next header tar: Archive contains obsolescent base-64 headers
bzip2: Data integrity error when decompressing. Input file = (stdin), output file = (stdout)
It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted. You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files.
You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover data from undamaged sections of corrupted files.

Dropped Karen a line after I checked my download (it's corrupt). She'll have the build engineer push out a new release.

Not as of earlier today. Though, if you make a copy of your current SL directory, then extract the 1.12 files into it, it works pretty well. I was in the 1.12 preview earlier. Didnt look like alot was fixed yet, but the client was able to detect my system's ram properly as well as the GPU I believe.

Wow! 1.12.0.1 running? I have a question: how did you get the files out of the archive? If I use bzip2recover, only ONE directory (block) is a valid chunk, the rest cannot uncompress , I get the message "not a valid tar". Using the -t "verify" option with bunzip gives only ONE corrupt block, block 91. However, the tar files that come out of the rest all have the message "not a valid tar" ... Is the block size funny? Or am I just a dummy?

Well, I did it the way I always do.. I went: tar xjvf <secondlife.tar.bz2>
That will extract up to the bad block, which is about 2/3rds of the tar.

Fantastic!!! It Works! Tar seems to be better at this recovery business than bzip2recover Thanks ... Now if I could just get over the "Download new Version?" message --- edit --- Oops! It helps if I try to use 1.12.0.1 on aditi instead of siva --- end edit ---
