![]() One machine is a dual boot, windows 2000 does run secondlife but barely. (edit, not everyone knows what FC is, at least fedora fc is cluefull) Both 1.5 ghz athalon, 512MB Ram, onboard 64MB video (trident on linux only (no model listed), nvidia <gibberish> on dual boot [windows thinks is generic], 80GB hard drive, no floppy, 16x cdrom, onboard everything else, soundcard is identified in both cases as soundblaster pci (I didnt know creative made on board sound cards until these two, cant see the chips for one monster heat sink covering all chipsand it's glued to the baby-board). the similarities are no mistake, both are from a hospital surplus sale. |

ATI Radeon 7000 was: Error-Window Creation Error

I am helping Doktor Seuss with her linux problems [she is a brand new convert
![]() I stumbled across a thread /263/15/148913/1.html which seems to have a lot of good information about this problem. In the end it looks like her onboard video cards are not going to work in linux for secondlife because finding non-generic drivers for embedded machines of questionable lineage is not going to happen. On a different topic, one of her machines does have 1 pci slot which would be usable if the cpu heatsink were shorter (first machine has one monster heatsink, second machine has two that look like one with the cpu heatsink being replaceable). NOTE: on both machines when the 'cmos reset' jumper is shorted, both now show BIOS menu's at boot time, both have option for disabling the onboard video... hopefully that helps someone else get mutant surplus hardware to a usable condition ![]() So does anyone know if the radeon 7000 64mb DDR card I have in my junk box will run secondlife before we spend the time and money to make this mutant machine work?. I see mention of 'Radeon 3xx models and similar' not working and neither of us are familiar enough with graphics cards to say what 'similar' means. This is not critical more of a weekend time eater project just to say 'we did it!' because she has a nice windows machine she usually secondlifes on. |

For more detailed info than the System Requirements page offers, have a look at http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=338, but [p]lease keep in mind the proceeding info is intended anecdotally, not as sales advice. Also, remember that "new" technology becomes dated fairly quickly; learn and use your best judgment when upgrading or purchasing a computer to use SL with. ![]() |
