How do i get SecondLife to open? Pointing the launcher to the "Secondlife" icon in the SecondLife directory is not working - the program is not opening with i double-click the Secondlife icon either. Help please!

I am wondering if it is a 32bit file issue so am currently installing the ia32-libs package with Synaptic. Hopefully that will work.

How did you solve it?

The icon is just that - an icon, in PNG format, that can be used when creating a desktop shortcut or menu entry. To launch the program from within Nautilus, you need to doubleclick the script file named "secondlife" (be sure it is set as executable). Then, when prompted, click "Run".

Good work Bri.
And you worked it out is good to hear. Yeah, adding the 32 bit libraries package solves that easily. Also that you are still with Linux, how do you get along with it now? Missing any applications?
The only program I can't run is SecondInventory so I use Suns' Virtual Box to run vista. Just for that. I groan whenever I have to use it.

The latest *buntu is about to be released too and KDE4 is mature enough now and works a treat, boots quickly and uses only <300mb of ram (at start).

Well finding the fix for the problem was easy the moment i said to myself it was a 32bit issue. I ran 32bit Ubu with no problems, double clicking everything to launch without ever a hiccup. When i could not do this in my 64bit install i just figured the only difference had to be the 64bit issue and that made me think that SL and Fireforx (another program that was giving me the same problem), were not 64bit 'aware' or 'compatible' so that sent me searching and i find about 4 different libraries that were 32bit and i was lucky and installed the right one on the first try: ia32-libc.

After that, everything works...well everything except gDesklets, which i guess i will tackle in the morning.

Linux is a learning curve that is all about memory I am seeing, just like any OS. Just way more to remember.

and why am i starting to like the terminal..........

Thanks Kornscope!

I initially installed Kubuntu but had the application launching error with both Second Life and Firefox, so i assumed it was Kubu and switched to Ubu where i was forced to tackle the issue.

I really liked the interface of the Kubu but my terminal skills are all Ubu centric, like "gedit" and other Gnome specific stuffs.

Oh and this 32bit library figuring out was nothing compared to my 3 week war with my Xorg.conf to get it working with dual monitors back in Ubu 8.10 32bit using an ATI card..that was a nightmare and i can't see anything in Ubuntu getting worse than that.

The Nvidia X server stuff is much more friendly.

Oh, yeah, xorg can be a real joy when it decides to act up! I still have memories from my Feisty (7.04) days.... *shudders*

Yeah, the ia32 issues... I must've gotten lucky when I first installed 64-bit Ubuntu under Hardy (8.04), because these libraries were installed already. However, other compatibility issues pretty much forced me to install the 32-bit version when Intrepid (8.10) was released - things like stability issues with Flash because the 64-bit Flash wasn't mature, and problems playing streaming audio and video within SL.

I've upgraded to the 64bit Karmic Koala version of Ubuntu. There is certainly a few bugs to work out now that we have ventured on to the new 64bit frontier. Karmic performs wonderfully and appears to outperform Vista with ease. The 32 bit version of Second Life however not so much. The program runs but the fixes posted to get the sound fixed haven't worked for me.
I'm looking forward to see full 64bit versions of Second Life. If it is going to be as snappy as the rest of Karmic Koala I'm going to dump Vista.
