Second Life crashes upon log-in

Hi,

I'm trying to run Second Life on a Thinkpad T60, with Ubuntu 6.10, and a Intel 945GM graphics adapter. I know that the videocard is not really great, but I would like to run it on this machine. I can log-in, but it will crash when I enter the world after a few seconds or so, when rendering the world.

Does anyone know / have of a solution for this?

Thanks,
Paul Matterhorn

Ok,

found the solution in LL_GL_BLACKLIST, and then disabling J. That gives me at least a workable Second Life. Seems a lot slower though than on Windows on the same machine.

It's the Intel graphics card in your laptop. Intel's kinda slacking with the 3D performance. Hopefully they'll jack it back up.

I doubt you can swap the card out for a better one like on the Dell Inspiron E1505.

I've got i945GM too. I get to run around in sl for approximately 0-1 minutes before not only sl crashes, but i get stuck in black X windows and have to ssh in to reboot the machine.

running xorg7.1 on linuxfromscratch.org :)

i get some kind of error code 11<?> in the logfile -- don't know what that's all about.

anyone have a clue?

A near-future update (though probably not this week's) will disable this problematic GL extension by default to avoid the fatalities with Intel 915/945 chipset users. (That also disables shiny by default, but people read the client's README file, right, so they'll know how to turn it on again... ;) )

During the beta phase we'll assemble a proper Linux GL blacklist so that 'everyone' gets the best set of features according to their card/drivers, instead of this lowest common denominator by default.

Cool... that does make me feel a lot better about making that option the default. :)

Edit the secondlife file (the one you click to run it).
Right-click the secondlife launch file & open with whatever editor you like, & change the line '#export LL_GL_BLACKLIST=abcd....' to 'export LL_GL_BLACKLIST=j'

Tried to do what you said and to no avail :( I found that the start up script is a .dll extension, which also noted that the name ext. .exe was changed to .dll it is an icon that is clicked on to start SL, and although I was able to paste the information onto notepad, it was unreadable, even attempted to change the font as well. When I right click on the icon to start SL, the only options that come up are: OPEN, Run as... Scan with AVG, Add to archive..., Add to "SecondLife.rar", Compress and email...,Compress to "SecondLife.rar" and email, Pin to Start menu, Sent To, Cut, Copy, Create Shortcut, Delete, Rename, Properties. No "open with" option.
I have sent notecards out to my friends hoping they can also assist and/or shed some light on this. I dropped you one as well. Here are the specs on the T61:
