I dunno, I probably should not post answers but I ran: sudo apt-get install esound and it got me running on the RC at least. Its worth a try first and cant hurt.

I had this problem too. Deleting cache manually did not help. Then I deleted .secondlife/username and i had no more login crashes.

ok

ok well i tried the RC and it does the same thing. I should clarify the problem a bit now that i think of it. What i meant by it crashing is that it freezes the entire computer when it gets to the part where it says "contacting region" or connecting to region" requiring a reboot. I thought maybe it was just freezing up and would unfreeze after a point, but i let it go for 20 min without it unfreezing so yeah. I will try to run it from terminal and see if it posts an error message before it freezes.

Aright, I ran it from terminal and this is the line it seems to freeze on: 2007-10-22T22:24:12Z INFO: LLInventoryModel::buildParentChildMap() Here is a photo I took of the screen so I didn't have to write down what it said when it froze. Maybe something before that line helps too. http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/4716/mg5935ue7.jpg

Did you try to delete the files at your .secondlife/cache/ folder yet. maybe that would help.

Or am I just an idiot who is looking in the wrong place?

That's ".secondlife/cache" (<dot>secondlife). It's a hidden folder. If you're running KDE, open the file browser (konqueror), browse to your home folder (/home/<user> and select "Show Hidden Files" from the "View" pulldown menu. A whole bunch of greyed-out folder icons will appear and their names will all start with a period (dot). You will find it there. Adamas

Luciean, can you run other OpenGL apps without any issues? Because if it's freezing your whole computer, that might indicate an issue with your video driver or something...

well i have compiz running, with all the associated eyecandy and it has absolutely no problem running it, its really fast in fact. I just thought about maybe trying to run SL with that turned off.... think that might make a difference?

Great news. I fixed the problem. There seems to have been an issue with the get deb SL install package that i installed initially. After removing that the RC runs perfect.

well, after working fine (mostly) for a week or so my problem has now returned without warning. Its doing the same thing it was. This really sucks i may have to go back to windows at this rate. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest looking at your graphics setup. I notice in all this you don't mention what card/chipset you are using or what version of driver you have. All that sounds a lot like the problems I was having with my old ATI card. I'm using an NVIDIA, and their Linux support is vastly superior.

I have an Nvidia 6800GT 256MB, i have the nvidia drivers installed and it works great. Compiz runs wicked fast, and SL was running fast too when it was running... its this issue with the Buildparentchild map thing that i mentioned before. thats where it is freezing.
I deleted the RC and the .secondlife folders and downloaded the stable release and its the same problem. deleted them both again and tried the latest RC again and its still happens
