If you have or if you are thinking about getting an ATi card and running Linux, read this before you waste your time. More and more cases of of Window Creation errors are coming up among a majority of ATi card users using fglrx who are trying to run the Second Life Viewer on 64 and 32bit platforms. Spending hours upon raking the internet over with a steel brush, I dug this up. Its a page that explains all the problems with fglrx and explains the lack of "alpha composite" SL needs to find that "matching GLX visual" and to create that missing "Window".

In short because xorg has been flakey with Alpha Composite support, ATi hasn't worked on it much either and therefor doesn't work very well, if at all. So for the time being, if you have a choice, get an nVidia card.

On my mission to explore all options to get The Second Life viewer to work on SimplyMepis64 with an Ati Radeon Xpress M200, I found this interesting site that sheds a lot of light on this kruddy driver. Anyone who has an ATi card should read this. It also has some detail concerning the shakey support for 'alpha composite' which is what SL requires in order to run.

And for those of us who don't have a choice and already have an ATI card installed with updated drivers and still get the window creation error, are we to give up hope entirely and switch to windows?
