Make sure, your X window system runs on 24 Bit color depth + 8 bit Alpha channel. Use xdpyinfo for this. And you will need the 1.9 linux alpha client that's supposed to come out real soon now.

What you need is:
* 3D drivers for your graphics card (usually a binary driver available on your card chipset's vendor's website, like nvidia or ati) * start up a console terminal (konsole, gnome-terminal, xterm or similar) and type xdpyinfo. This should give you lots of information on your graphics card settings. Check the first few lines to see, if GLX is working (we definitely need a FAQ section that deals with different graphics cards on different distributions) _____________________

(we definitely need a FAQ section that deals with different graphics cards on different distributions) I think a link to each distro's own 'hardware 3d howto' would be better. Its all genrally the same, install drivers, fiddle with your x config, test with glxinfo. The exact route varies from distro to distro. It also makes life much simpler if a user has a problem, they can go to their distros forums and say "I followed the official guide but it doesnt work - help!" _____________________

This is fine with me, too. Can we start collecting links to good HOWTOS that can help people with setting um GLX on various Distibutions and Hardware?
