Even I'm a windows user from the old union (since win 3.1) I encouraged myself to test the Linux client of SecondLife viewer.
I don't know anything about Linux and I mean it when I say that I installed to my second laptop (IBM R51) my first Linux dist. ever.
And of course I have to use ubuntu (6.06.1) because I have heard that that is almost the easiest linux to install.
And it was.
Now I have use that linux laptop with linux SL client almost a week and I haven't had any problem at all (with SL:)
Of course, there is a lot's of thing about linux (eg. how to install adobe, java) but that's an other thing.
I think that this is great than Lindens have made this client for Linux and I really hope that they get the real version soon out (even I start using my xp version, because I have done my testing with linux:)

Welcome to the world of penguins!

I was quite impressed when I first tested the linux client, my expectations were quite low considering it was alpha software and all.. But I'm glad it's there now. I've gone 100% linux now and I'm NOT going to switch back or "upgrade" to bloaty vista. I wish more companies followed LL example and recognized linux as a desktop OS.

PS. there's a lot of easy to follow guides at ubuntu forums for things like java, flash etc :)

Not to mention Synaptic Package Manager... enable the universe/multiverse etc. repositories and you should be able to get 99% of what you need installed without any bother...

The problem with providing a package that distros can use is that SL updates and moves on so quickly. It might be best to package up a non-interactive script that can fetch & install the current version.

Hi Juhani,

I come from a Linux-background and am a SL-newbie, so here it is just the other way around :)

If you want to learn about Linux, we have a free Intoduction to Linux Basics available at http://LinuxBasics.org/course/start

The course just started this week, so you would not even need to catch up that much. Might be interesting for you.

Yours,

Stef Wade
