I wanna Post in Summary my Problems with SL Alpha 1_18_1_2 on an Ubuntu Feisty Fawn System and an Ati Radeon 9600XT:

1. No Movies work (that probably may be couse i dont spend much time with this issue)
2. No Audio Chat (nothing that i would cry on)
3. SL crashes often when i open the Profile Dialog Box (that really is a problem)
4. for now 24.08.2007 i have a Packet loss often about 27% and with many graphic options turned of and low detail and landrange settings the objects are build very slow around me. Thats the worsed problem.

i´ve got some questions to the Linden Team:
Is there a timeline when the linux client is going beta or release, or when special things gonna be implemented?

Could it be true that the Linux Client is dammed to be alpha till the end of the Universe couse theres no priority to this Version?

When you will come to the Idea to consult middlesized and big Companies professionally in what they can reach with Second Life for their Buisness.

Ok Linden Labs, youre professionell, smart and creative in technologic advantages. But whats with the Marketing Concepts that have to work for Buisnesses in SL.

Mercedes-Benz had an stupid, badmade, boring and very unimformative depandance in SL. Once i´ve visit them, i will never come again. These Guys need really a better strategy to use SL for maximum success. Nobody uses the REALCONTACT Option in SL. SL is NOT an automatisation of marketing, its a media for Contacts from Human to Human, and that is what in my opinion the Marketing Strategies have to be build on in SL.

That has nothing to do with linux alpha, but it had to come out....

Cheers

I'm having trouble getting SL to start up.
When I'm using the 32 bit version of Ubuntu 7.04, I get a Window Creation Error when I try to run Second Life. So, I figured that maybe I need to update my video card driver. So, I go to the Restricted Drivers Manager and it says "Your hardware does not need any restricted drivers".

my graphics card is:
Chaintech GeForce 8500 GT.

Does anyone have a suggestion that can help me?

Well for your Graphics card use a program called envy, it will download and build the correct driver for your video card since your video card is too new for the drivers in the repositories.

I have a problem when starting up. the window comes up then stays blank and unresponsive. I have to kill it and nothing seems to work. I have the correct drivers installed.

Go to NVIDIA's website, not Chaintech's. They supports this product under Linux and provide the driver. NVIDIA's search engine refers to it as: "GeForce 8 Series." Be sure to select "Linux x86" and not "Linux x64."

Thanks!
That's exactly what I needed. and it works!

If anyone experiences freezes and slow reactions in SL, its the nature of the service.
Sometimes SL will even crash and everything disappears. That's normal for SL. Its not the Linux software.
