You're running this program as root, with no access to the X server. Certian enviroment varibles aren't moved when you "su" or "sudo su" into root.

Get out of root and back as a regular user. Make one and repremand yourself if you've been root all this time. Extract Second Life into it's own directory on your home directory as your regular user, and run it there.

It's working now.

Someone else that uses my distro helped me figure it out. I was right to use su command. He knows how to use Linux real well so he figured it out and then told me. I don't think the su command in Ultima Linux is full root just gives root privllages. I had the correct commands I just needeed to run NVIDIA -xconfig then it worked. That Linux NVIDIA driver was a huge pain to figure out. Now why won't any sound work in SL?

No! Bad newbie!

su is root. It IS different than a root login, but only because it doesn't import environment variables (you can "su -" to get that functionality). Root privileges is JUST AS BAD as being root. It's essentially the same thing, as far as access and security. Your friend may know some things about Linux, but security is not one of them, it would seem.

Warning: Do NOT run userspace applications as root, ESPECIALLY programs that access the Internet. It is a Very Bad Idea (tm).

Also, sound isn't supported by the native Linux client. See the known bugs thread for a list of everything that isn't yet supported.

Darkside is spot on. Never, ever, ever run anything as root unless you have to - if you're not sure if you need to be root, try it as a regular user first.

If you have difficulty getting SL to work as a normal user, I suggest to try reinstalling with Zonax's installer script (run from home dir as normal user)

NO! BAD NEWBIE!

NEVER BE ROOT UNLESS YOU'RE UPGRADING SOFTWARE OR PERFORMING SYSTEM MAINTANCE!

If you only need to run NVidia's installer, you should of shut down X11 to begin with, THEN run the installer as root. NVidia's nvidia-settings program does not need root, and nether does Second Life.
