We do indeed plan to release a Linux client alpha of 1.9.0. However, this may not happen the day of the 1.9.0 release. I will work on a new build as soon as all of the last minute issues with are ironed out -- I should know tomorrow (Tuesday 3/14) whether it will be smooth sailing or not! (I will post an update with that information soon after.)

Great to hear, and many thanks for updating the Linux community on how progress is made. Please keep updating us, so we can anticipate the new release!

The developer who did most of the work on the Linux client has been busy with other projects for the last several weeks and therefore is unable to attend to bug fixes. We anticipate his return to the project soon, although I have not spoken with him or Cory about an exact start date.
Give the man a comfy chair and a backrub when he comes back! And if he ever needs help, I'm sure a lot of us will be glad to lend a paw or two

Suffice it to say that we at Linden Lab are all impressed with the tenacity and dedication of the Linux community and your support for the client. I heartily encourage all of you to continue submitting bugs, and sharing your tips and tricks with the others in this forum as well as in-world. Once the developer is back on the case, and other resources are free, we will move forward with fixes where ever possible!
Yes, the linux community can be very dedicated to projects they find worth pursuing. And even though the SL client is not open source - as it would be preferred by us, but may be not possible because of protocol exploits and other things - we still value the work you put into the project. Linux as a whole is still neglected by most of the game industry, so the community tries all they can to at least keep what they got. That's also the reason why we feel like being left out or "second grade customers" very quickly when things like the last update happen, especially when the action seems completely superfluous or badly thought out.
So, my hopes are, that the Linux client will arrive quickly after the switch to 1.9, and since it is supposed to be integrated in the main code tree, there shouldn't bee too much of a wait. Keep us updated on the matter, we put all our hopes in you!

Thank you for your message!
