Ok, so I remembering someone here siad they could get sl running with mandriva, so I've got mandriva 2009 (the 'one'0 version running on a partition.

Compaq V5207NR laptop
Intel 945GM 3d graphics card (integrated)

How I make this work?

The linux beta client should run OK for you... read the install directions (pretty simple - unpack it in a directory and you're done installing. Execute the file 'secondlife' either from the command line or create an icon for your desktop)

But the built-in graphics might limit your resolution. (But it would limit your resolution under Windows too).

Your message was pretty general. Are you a new linux user? Or new to the distribution? New to SL?

If you feel a bit more adventurous, you could go here
http://intellinuxgraphics.org/index.html
and try to compile your own linux intel driverset. Everythings explained there, but its not exactly meant to be tried by beginners. But, whatever ^_^ the worst that could happen is, that you'd have to reinstall linux. And who knows, you might learn a thing or two about linux and even might have fun doing so ^_^
Happy experimenting ^_^

From what I'm reading, the Intel drivers need a fairly updated Xorg server (1.4.x). Gentoo on my end only has 1.3 marked as Stable, so i'll have to push things through.

You should be able to get it working with the open intel drivers, kernel DRI and the Mesa GL with acceptable framerate without having to compile stuff yourself off the Intel site. Debian worked pretty much out of the box; you might consider installing the omvviewer package anyway to ensure you have all the appropriate libs and whatnot for your distro.

Sorry i was so general: here are the specifics:

On the first time I log into sl, it works fine for a few minutes, then crashes. On all susequent attempts, as soon as I log in I crash. This is a full on computer freeze, I have to do a hard shut down by simply unplugging. I have tried several distros...ubutu, mandriva, and now Mint. Mint seems to do the best so far.

I'm not new to sl, I've played for many years. SL runs slow, but acceptable on the same machine under windows xp. I am, however, new to linux (I've tried to switch many times, most end in frustration and I just go back to xp); and new to every distro.

Right now i'm using Mint, which I kinda like. It as no dealbreakers out of the box.

I have the packages Baloo reccmended installed...I'm not sure if i need to tweak them or what.

I could not find the 'omwiewer' I thought it was a typo, so I tried omviewer too...I could not find it in the synaptic package management program.

I have a few speculations:

1) maybe I'm running out of memory and sl crashes trying to use the swap partition?
2) There is an unfixable probem and linux and sl simply will not work with my machine?
3) Bug in the linux sl client?

it's not in the standard synaptic repositories, i just found instructions to request it by googling.

http://www.byteme.org.uk/secondlife/apt-get-a-secondlife.html

I'm about to try it on Mint.

Its got two v's, not a w as you were seeing it. omVviewer

Edit: Nope, couldnt get it to apt-get even using sudo. Weird.

Swapping shouldn't crash the client. The current Public Nightly build (and I guess the RC, too) seem to have some memory leaks, so my PC starts swapping after 20 min or so. SL gets veeeery slow but doesn't crash, though. It might crash if you don't have a swap partition or if the swap partition isn't enabled or is full, I guess.

The best way to unstick a frozen Linux box is with the three-chord salute: alt-sysreq-s, (wait until hard drive lights stop flashing) then alt-sysreq-u, then alt-sysreq-b. This forces your system to try an emergency synch and unmount before booting, which can potentially avoid you data loss headaches when you do have to pull an emergency reboot.

omvviewer has two "v"s and one "w."

Nope, you'd just get really slow while it was grinding as swap. Programs are generally unaware that they're being swapped, to them address space is address space, whether it's in the swap space or in core is for the OS kernel to sort out.

Not possible as phrased. Both Linux and SL are open source, so on some level it's going to be fixable, it's just a matter of time and eyeballs on code.

3) Bug in the linux sl client?

Not likely but more likely than the previous option.

My thoughts is that this likely has to do with not having DRI and/or GL support properly functioning on this system.

My fiancée has that same GPU in her laptop; you do need to ensure you have the mesa DRI and GLX packages from your distro. In Debian (and possibly Ubuntu, and if they're the same name in the RPM world, then it's a miracle), you want to look for libgl-mesa-glx and libgl-mesa-dri.
