I dont use Linux very much, so not familiar with how everything works. After I downloaded the file to install it , It opened it with a program called File Roller it said there where 931 files inside and listed them all but for the life of me I could not figure out which file I needed to use to load SL so I can play. And I didnt want to start messing with stuff and break things which I am apt to do. Sadly, at this time I cannot use anyother operating system to play SL so, if I cant get this to work on Linux, Im outta luck and I really miss playing its been near two months. And would really rather not have my account deactived before I can figure this out so please someone help me! I many not be able to check the link here for a few days so if you know how to help me I would really appriciate it if you could drop your message in an email also, its [email]jill10887@yahoo.com[/email] thanks again for any who can help! Oh and by the way, my tech skills are seriously lacking so if you could explain it as simply as possible I would be very thankful!

file roller is a program to extract the files from a compressed format. The file you downloaded is compressed archive; a zip file is an example of what a compressed file is.

Second Life needs *ALL* of those files. They are nessisary for SL to run in Linux.

If you have an NVidia card, though, and just want to run SL, then go to the SL Linux Live CD thread in this forum. That will point you to the Knoppix CD which I have, preconfigured to pull and run Second Life.

Otherwize, try this:

1. Move the SL .tar.bz2 file to your home directory.
2. Open a terminal window. You should land in your home directory.
3. Type in:
CODE
tar xfvj SecondLife_*.tar.bz2

4. "cd" into the SecondLife directory that was created. Use "ls" to show what it's named as.
5.
CODE
./secondlife

If you're new to Linux, you may need a few books. Try The Linux Documentation Project for a free handbook on using Linux at the command line.

In a tcsh on BSD:
From: someone

[misssarah:/Applications] catherin% cd SecondLife_1_11_3_1
[misssarah:/Applications/SecondLife_1_11_3_1] catherin% ls
SecondLife featuretable.txt licenses.txt
app_settings fonts lsl_guide.html
bin help releasenotes.txt
character lib secondlife.ico
[misssarah:/Applications/SecondLife_1_11_3_1] catherin% ./SecondLife
tcsh: ./SecondLife: Permission denied.
[misssarah:/Applications/SecondLife_1_11_3_1] catherin% sudo ./SecondLife
Password:
sudo: ./SecondLife: command not found
[misssarah:/Applications/SecondLife_1_11_3_1] catherin% cd bin
[misssarah:/Applications/SecondLife_1_11_3_1/bin] catherin% ls
secondlife-bin
[misssarah:/Applications/SecondLife_1_11_3_1/bin] catherin% ./secondlife
tcsh: ./secondlife: Command not found.
[misssarah:/Applications/SecondLife_1_11_3_1/bin] catherin% ./secondlife-bin
tcsh: ./secondlife-bin: Exec format error. Binary file not executable.
[misssarah:/Applications/SecondLife_1_11_3_1/bin] catherin%

A format error? :( Now I'm stumped.

Hrrrm, shouldn't be a problem running the client on BSD, though there might be a missing compatibility layer somewhere. BUT, try backing up one directory and running the script instead of the binary. The script sets the environment and malloc for the client to run.

Yeah, I did that first (and again); it did not recognize 'secondlife' or 'SecondLife' as a package.

From: someone

[misssarah:/Applications/SecondLife_1_11_3_1] catherin% ./secondlife
tcsh: ./secondlife: Permission denied.
[misssarah:/Applications/SecondLife_1_11_3_1] catherin% sudo ./secondlife

mav@huskeh:~/SecondLife$ ls
app_settings fonts licenses.txt secondlife
bin help lsl_guide.html SecondLife
character lastrun.log releasenotes.txt secondlife.ico
featuretable.txt lib report_screenshot.bmp

That should be your directory listing more or less. The lower case 'secondlife' is the script. Run it with ./secondlife and it should go, else try 'sh secondlife', be sure to have used the proper decompression tool for the archive so that empty directories are not lost.

Okay...
08-26-2006 21:20
Now it appears that I have done the executing part right...

From: someone

misssarah:/Applications root# cd Second*
misssarah:/Applications/SecondLife_1_12_0_13 root# ./secondlife
./secondlife: line 4: bin/secondlife-bin: cannot execute binary file

...only to find that it won't run anyway! :(

p.s. I untarballed the stuff in tcsh, so it should not be the problem with missing directories.

You should not be running as root,

Also you need the linux compatability libs installed for BSD. Which BSD are you using by the way?

Here is the info for FreeBSD:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/linuxemu-lbc-install.html

Looks like a lot of work to me!!

Also remember you need accelerated gfx drivers.

Since I do not use BSD I cannot help much more..

I am also having a problem running SL. When I run './secondlife' or 'sh secondlife' I get an error message that says...
From: someone
bin/secondlife-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libdb-4.2.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Dont know what else to do, any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Oh yeah, by the way...I'm using Ubuntu 6.06...any other information needed just let me know.

EDIT: I found the answer myself by continuing my forum search. I found my answer in /263/08/120700/1.html#post1144955Hope it helps people who come accross the same problem.
