I have decided to try out Ubuntu 8.10 now that I have things running what I'l like to do is use voice chat.
Note: I'm am new to using Linux as a workstation. any who I have SL enabled in the SL client but I'm getting nothing.

"Voice" under Ubuntu (or Linux in general) is a hit or miss proposition. Search for 'voice' and 'linux' on this site for extensive examples of people working with this issue.

you should try the OpenAL test client, it works great with All SL related sound
