I posted this questions a while ago, I was told to use WINE. I use Ubuntu 7.10 and so far have not tried WINE as I would like to use a Linux application to do this.

Anybody? it would be cool to do this just using Linux apps and no WINE.

You could use icecast as server and idjc as icecast client for example. both are linux native programs.

IIRC you will also need jackd installed and running to be able to use idjc.. Very nice app tho!

There are native Linux binaries for Shoutcast:
http://www.shoutcast.com/download/serve.phtml
Which I use.

Otherwise yes, the Icecast option is the way to go. On debian at least you need to use the http://www.debian-multimedia.org package repository to get round the mp3 licensing issues.
I've got "deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main" in my /etc/apt/sources.list file and it seems to do the trick.

PS. I don't think you do need jack installed.
And as far as options go, I can see:
flumotion, icecast, idjc, liveice, poc-streamer, slimp3, slimserver, somaplayer, vlc and plugins for xmms etc.. any of which might do the kind of thing you're looking for (at least in part!).

I stream quite well with "ices" and "icecast"

install icecast.
install ices
build a list of your mp3/ogg files
and start streaming

the config files are self-explanatory and nicely detailed for easy setup

have a look here: http://www.icecast.org/docs.php

it took me under an hr to get everything going from scratch

for live dj-ing. try IDJC http://www.onlymeok.nildram.co.uk/
this needs some reading an dtrial & error.. but can be made to work well..
