No color and degraded image

I loaded SL 1.14.0.1. When I start it up, the image is seriously degraded and there is no color -- just black and white and blurry. If I log on, the screen is almost entirely white with just the hint of shapes. I can still run the First Look viewer without any problem.

I am using Ubuntu Edgy with an nVidia GeForce MX400 card. I haven't had any problems up to now. Anyone have a clue? Thanks!

I corrected this problem by deleting the preferences file (.secondlife). I actually renamed it, just in case. As soon as I did that and loaded SL, the display returned to normal. A friend reported a similar display problem on her Mac; I am going to suggest she try something similar to see if it fixes her problems.
