I would love to carry on using the linux alpha client.

Howver, 1.8.4.6 is unusable for me, I live on an island sim and the water itself is enough to stop the SL client dead.

Is there any chance we could get the 1.8.4.7 linux alpha client soon?

--- EDIT ----

1.8.4.6 is now dead :(

No More SL Linux

within a week? (or so...)

Here is the thread on this...

/invalid_link.html

It seems we are not THAT integrated in the normal distribution tree...

Maybe they will look at the Alpha Issue etc as well?

:p

A girl can dream, can't she?

Hey, at least the Linux community, in proper form, fixed that bug for them ;-)

Yeah, Linux community fixes THEIR bugs, to get shut off the net for days :P

(kudos to the guy who did the fix, though! you're still my hero!)

The linux client is now in the 'main' codebase. However, not all of our developers have a linux workstation to test it on. Until we get a linux box for the specific purpose of building/testing the linux client, however, the linux deploy needs to wait for me to get a chance to run a build.

Building another linux box for testing is pretty trivial, though, so it shouldn't be long until this is a part of the normal process.

(The 1.8.4.7 client is building right now. I'll hand it off for deployment soon).

Great news! I really hope we can get the updated client soon. Thanks for at least giving us a heads-up! Can you explain why it had to go mandatory so soon?

Thanks for working on it!

It's thursday. If it's building right now shouldn't it be deployed maybe by Friday? Monday maybe? But "sometime next week" makes it sound like it'll be Wednesday at the earliest

Ah well, the good thing about not having SL is I can continue to work on my thesis =P

It depends on how much communication Robin has with Don. From my (brief) experiences in the software development industry, communication can be a pretty big barrier.

Here's a scenario. Don't know how accurate it is:
Don handles the Linux client almost exclusively. Robin doesn't know when Don will have the Linux build ready, but is fairly sure it will happen within a week. Robin says this when asked (outside the Linux forum. It's reasonable that we can't guarantee an answer that's informed about the Linux client there, especially if Don handles it himself).

So, it seems to me that in this case, you can't judge an answer by it's connotations. "Today or tomorrow" is definitely "within the next week", even if the phrase conjures images of waiting. And hey, as an added bonus, now we're pleasantly surprised!

Now, if they wait until Wednesday to deploy the client, well... that would just suck.

Common wisdom (and sense!) says that you never deploy a new version of anything on a Friday. In this case however, a maybe-broken release sounds more practical than a 100% locked-out release. :)

Linux alpha client 1.8.4.7 is now available for download

I apologize for changing the 1.8.4.7 version to mandatory without first providing a new linux client. There were some problems with the build that were quickly resolved; you can now download the new version!

Perfectly understandable since you needed to fix as many people as soon as possible.

A heads up would have sufficed, thanks for comming through with a new client so quickly :)

Just curious, but have y'all tried running from liveCDs? Secondlife runs pretty darned well on my Fujitsu Lifebook S2020 (ATI Radeon Mobility U1/IGP320M) with the gentoo 2005.1 Experimental live CD (Edit: 2006.0 is out and the livecd is no longer experimental. Will check tonight after I've downloaded it) -- even though that video chipset is completely unsupported in windows (No, I mean it. It's supposed to be a Radeon 7500 core with the TCL unit ripped out (Texture, Clipping, and Lighting) -- so under linux, I assume those calls fall back on Mesa.) But it works. Quite well. Around 8-10 FPS, actually, in the Hemaris sim. The really funny thing is, this laptop actually gets a better framerate than my partner's box, which has a more powerful AMD chip (2600+ vs laptop's M2200+) and a GeForce 5700LE on windows.

Also, if y'all are working in an office-type environment and not telecommuting, a networked linux boot is quite possible and relatively easy to set up. Most modern machines with onboard networking support PXE booting. 90% of PCI network cards do as well. You only need a single server to hold the base system image for 1000s of client PCs, especally with NFS roots. There's plenty of other ways to do this though.

One thing I'd like to see pretty soon are some Secondlife ebuilds for gentoo. Before you scream at me that Portage is a source-compiling system, it CAN do binary packages as well. (Just look at Winex/Cedega or many other ebuilds) Only one problem with that: It'd likely be a bit hard to find someone willing to update the ebuild every time SL's updated, which seems to be every week. But who knows, you might just get yourself a SL convert out of it ;)

Sorry for the wacko post, I don't often post on forums. (Personally, I hate 'em. Prefer instant systems like IRC or IMs. Long live jabber!)
