Recently, after updating to the newest Linux viewer, my computer has started getting pink lines through it like the graphics card has been fried or something, Im not entirely sure.

I was running Ubuntu 7.10 Alpha Tribe 5 and my computer locked up with a red cross-hatch pattern on it. It then refused to work at all, saying that GNOME could not start. I tried installing Ubuntu 7.04 over it and deleted all of my partitions. The problem has continued.

Im at a complete loss as for what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance guys...

I once had weird graphic issues caused by bad main memory. You might want to drop in a Knoppix CD (or any other live CD with that feature) and, instead of booting, have it check your memory (available as one of the boot loader's menu items).

I don't know if something equivalent exists to check the integrity of the graphic card hardware, though.

I had an ATI card a while back that did similar things because the fan on the card had broken. It only had problems when I tried running 3D intensive things. 2D graphics ran cool enough to be ok apparently. By the time I realised it was the fan though I'd thoroughly fried the graphics card :P

Well, I tried that with a 7.04 Ubuntu CD that I have and had it check my memory. It said that everything was fine. I even tried to wipe my HD of all partitions and it is still doing it. It doesnt just do it in the OS though, it does it even on the BIOS boot screen.

Well, I took apart the bottom and looked at the fan while it ran, the fan still runs and everything is fine as far as I can tell...

Hmmm ...
Well since memory checks out ok I guess you'll just have to try dropping a replacement graphics card in if you have one to hand, or borrow one off a friend.
It could in theory be a whole host of things ... Any of your other expansion cards for example. But I think it's just coincidence you were running SL at the time.
Good Luck tracking it down!

Sometimes it is a contact issue. taking the card out, reseating it a few times sometimes helps.

The graphics distortion is funny

I have had that on other 3D games that require hot graphics, but re-seating seemed to fix it.

The "nvidia-settings" program can show you if temperature is an issue, it is installed when you install the nvidia graphic driver.

It *could* be the monitor itself-can you hook it up to another computer? Because if even the BIOS screen is distorted...
