When I log into SL it runs quickly and well. But after just a minute or two the controls become slow to respond. After about five minutes you may as well say the controls are completely unresponsive. This applies to walking, driving, flying equaly.
I run a Dell inspiron E1505, Intel graphics card, and Ubuntu 6.06 LTS.

I also have a Dell Inspiron E1505.
It's the Intel graphics video card you have. Edit 'secondlife' and uncomment LL_BLACKLIST_EXT. Then change the a-z list to just 'j'.
If worse comes to worse, look for a NVidia card for your E1505 on Ebay or any parts place. It's a semi-easy swap out, and Dell gives you instructions on how to do it.

From: Black Stallion what type of video card do you have? I really don't remember the model, but it is the standard Intel graphics card.

try lshw

From: Dabhidh McMillan I really don't remember the model, but it is the standard Intel graphics card. Try something like this in a terminal window # lshw (...If you want a textfile for copy-paste do something like this: # lshw > hardware.txt ...)

From: Walter Pinion I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but so you don't waste a bunch of time seeking a solution: Inspiron's are notebooks, and only a very small percentage of notebooks have replaceable video cards, on almost all of them it's a chip soldered to the mainboard. Unfortunately, that means upgrading to a compatible video card may not be possible on that system. From the System Requirements page at: http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.phpNote the 4th incompatible video card type listed. This is incorrect. Lots of people successfully use Intel cards for SL under Linux... See Drake's post above

Yes... just because it's not supported doesn't mean it can't work. Personally I'm happy to see the client working at all on as wide a variety of 3D hardware as plausible, as long as the Linux drivers are up to it (never a sound assumption). Whether the actual performance and quality is up to scratch on basic hardware is ultimately going to have to be the user's call. I was on pretty terrible hardware when I first joined SL, but my enjoyment of the world outweighed the frustration of my 3D card's performance!

Hm, then perhaps the system requirements page needs an overhaul, at the very least the words "it's NOT compatible with Second Life", to avoid misleading anyone else.

While the linux client is still alpha - or beta - we don't know what is not compatible; there are a lot of variables to be evaluated, and the code is still evolving constantly. If it works, it's compatible. As a guide, the standard win32 compatibility list on the web site is a reasonable fit.

I took out an ATI X1300 with little difficulty to put in an NVidia Geforce Go 7300 (from a working pull of another E1505), and Dell's Support site provides instructions of disassembling the laptop properly. You'll probably find the ATI card on Ebay more than the NVidia, but if you're getting a new laptop, dude, get a Dell! Last time I checked, my system specs only cost $1003 before shipping.

Read your own post again, I'm done - I tried to contribute to this thread based on what secondlife.com says, and got corrected by several people. When I suggested that the main page could stand clarification, I got corrected again. The heck with that, I'll just lurk from now on.
