There's some fun modelines in there. I run my cheapo 17in monitors at 1280x960, as that gives me square pixels, and also allows me to squeeze a 70hz refresh out of them, rather than eye-stabbing 60hz. xorg does not have 1280x960@70hz modelines so I had to make some. And I discovered when you put custom modelines in, all the standard ones for that resolution are ignored so I have to duplicate the standard modelines as well.

And awhile back, just for the hell of it, I was experimenting with a little old 9' monochrome fixed frequency VGA monitor, one of those ones intended for cash registers. I realised you could interlace 640x480, doubling the vertical resolution to 960, though this reduces your framerate to 30hz. Flickery as hell, but this means you can get 1280x960 out of a bog standard, original issue IBM VGA display!

... And I guess the signal must be somewhat out of spec, as the display squashes down vertically. This particular monitor has a vertical height adjustment but it couldn't adjust far enough. So I generated a 1704x960 16:9 widescreen modeline. High-def, yeah I push it to the limit, baby. I'm overclocked and ready to rock. Don't forget your socks. Word.

Jebus I had/have no life.

Here try this. It got SL working for me under linux

Code:

sudo gedit /etc/X11/XvMCConfig

Add this line to XvMCConfig which you just made

Code:

libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1

Thank's for your help but it doesn't work with your line code!

Works fine execept I can't turn avatar vertex shading on, or ripple water. Anyone know of a way to force it to allow those things? the boxes are grayed out.

Yes.

in the secondlife script, comment out the line:

Heh, interesting note. Enabling all gl extensions (commenting that out) does not play nice with Beryl :).

As if it was THAT simple to get SL running optimally! :p

Now it's time to start playing with "export LL_GL_BLACKLIST=[a-z]" to see what is usable on your particular system.

We are all VERY interested in seeing what you have to blacklist to satisfy SL AND Beryl ;)

I'm on a Pentium-D/3.4GHz with a Radeon X800

SL works for me, although I do two things:

* comment out the various extention-killing defines in the "secondlife" script (they all seem to work for me)
* run "export MALLOC_CHECK_=1" before running SL; otherwise, I'm guaranteed a crash in 0-30 minutes as glibc catches a double-free and punts

Note, I am using the open source drivers; I'm on Debian etch, so I have a relatively recent version of X.org and the radeon drivers.

CODE

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated

I also have a 1.3GHz Pentium-M laptop with a Radeon Mobility M6 that works... if anybody is interested. I get at best 4-5 fps there.

Actually, I get 30-50 fps in Pi even with 10 or so avatars in range. That's actually better than what I get in Windows (20-40). my proc is even a few years old, Athlon XP 2500+ (3200 oc'd). I also have no sound blipping like I do in windows. It was much easier to get working than I expected.

Hehe, to be fair, while I can run both with the right extentions enabled, I do have the new windows being black problem when all my vid memory is used up. the Beryl people say it's the nVidia drivers. I can fix it by switching to the AIGLX pipeline rather than the nNvidia pipeline, but it's much much slower. I did see the gl_blacklist flag though, and it would be very interesting :).

Apparently it wasn't the GL extensions that were causing the problem at all. It was ALSA. I uncommented export LL_BAD_ALSA=x and it works just fine. Previously I'd had the other 2 sound systems blocked, because I figured alsa was the way to go, I use it for everything else. SL just doesn't like it though.
