theres a milion websites like that, but the thing is almost all linux distro's have a free version, 99.999999% of them will work just fine with SL (altho you might have to install a video driver)

The latest Ubuntu actually includes drivers for NVidia cards.

Not really the "latest"...

The latest Ubuntu actually includes drivers for NVidia cards. It's rather the latest alpha version of the next Ubuntu release, which has rough edges to smooth out. I'd recommend the latest stable release and do "sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx" instead. |

I got SL to work under OpenSUSE 10.2 loaded on an HP 8776c with 512meg ram, a 1Ghz processor and an ATI 9250 graphics card (128meg). (It was really a last-ditch effort to make SL work on this machine, as I could not get ATI's crappy proprietary drivers to work at all!)
What I did was to make sure the stock driver was set for 3D and then I loaded all the OpenGL stuff I could find. Here is the list of OpenGL stuff I used (I searched available packages for "opengl" and got these): compiz fltk ftgl glitz glitz-devel gltt gtkglarea Mesa xgl I don't know which ones made the difference, but it actually works. I don't know if this strategy will work with Nvidia cards, I haven't tried it yet. You don't say what exactly isn't working for you, so perhaps you could provide some details. Stuff like: type and speed of processor, amount of ram, video card make, model, how much ram it has, the Linux distribution you're using (U/Kubuntu, SUSE, Debian, etc.), version, and desktop (KDE, Gnome, other). Also, some idea of what error messages you're getting would be helpful. If you're not getting any, try running SL from a terminal and copy and paste the messages that appear. Chances are, whatever the problem, someone else has already conquered it. |

I don't know which ones made the difference, but it actually works. Actually, none. Mesa may have been the s-l-o-o-o-o-w OpenGL software implementation you were lacking, and that solved your problem. But if you use native, proprietary, binary drivers, you don't let the CPU do in software the work that would be done in hardware by the GPU. I'm puzzled to hear that you weren't able to install the binary drivers. Nowadays it became relatively easy, both for AMD and Nvidia to install them in any reasonably recent linux distro. |

Those drivers will not (and I tried both the repository and five versions, starting with the most recent, of the manual package) work at all. The fact that I was able to make something work is significant. By the way, the manual package requires installation of Mesa (among other things). The stuff I added to that list seemed to make the difference. And, I only work with the most recent versions of Kubuntu and (in this case) OpenSUSE. |

got SL to work under OpenSuse 10.2 with a Nvidia go7400 graphiccard. the only thing must changed against the distribution (not 3D enabled) was the nvidia driver 100.14.09 ... got it from nvidia.com like described here:
Update your Kernel via YOU (YaST Online Update). Use YaST -> Software -> Installation Source -> Add Protocol: HTTP Server Name: : download.nvidia.com Directory on Server: /opensuse/10.2 to add the NVIDIA ftp server as additional installation source. Now use YaST -> Software -> Software Management to install the NVIDIA driver. Select the following packages: x11-video-nvidiaG01 nvidia-gfxG01-kmp-"kernel-flavor" after installation you MUST reboot, otherwise you cannot configure X! |

Nvidia's drivers actually do work. I have a 7300GT w/512M and it is fantastic.
Given Nvidia's great support of Linux, I am more likely to use their product with any OS than ATI. |

yea i love nvidia's drivers here here for nvidia! i struggled with an ati x1300 for about a week with getting black screen of death everytime i tried to configure it. i couldn't take it anymore so i bought a geforce 7950 GT /w512M and i couldn't be happier. awesome drivers, awesome support! openSUSE hates ati drivers >_<! but yeah, lol nvidia + openSUSE FTW! SL runs smooth and makes my job building a much better experience. now if only shiney worked properly then i'd be set. |

To just add one to the list - I'm running SL on Fedora 7 with nvidia drivers from rpm.livna.org.
I didn't experience any problems related to other than the client itself so far. Just compiled a client from source with the make-SL script and it worked almost out-of-the-box. (On Fedora you have to make a symlink g++-3.4 that points to g++34 or build will fail.) |

If you are using a 64bit version of linux, check out the thread below this one (ATI detected as Mesa).
I'm running Fedora7 with ATI drivers from freshrpms.net. |
