Tofu has said that the voice client for Linux is mostly ready, but he's waiting for the voice chat vendor(Vivox) to send a binary blob for Linux. I'm going to test the new beta grid client, since the general release notes said that voice has been integrated into it.

Update: Having trouble with beta grid client. It segfaults after logging in but before you get in-world.

The beta crashes pretty quickly as is mentioned in another thread. The Linux beta doesn't seem to have voice as there is no voice section in the preferences and I can't see any new binary blobs to make it work. They should fix the announcement to point out the Linux beta doesn't have voice.

Any workarounds, then?

Until Vivox does get around to it, are there any workarounds that run on Linux? I'm gonna try Teamspeak and see how it works for me.

I will assume Vivox has a different protocol and codec. Teamspeak I would assume has it's own streaming protocol, although it uses Speex as the codec.

I had trouble with sound in SL using Teamspeak but I use SecondTalk from Centric that works with Skype and it works very well. It's just that very few people use it.

since when does a third party working for linden labs get to dicide what it has intrest in. SL has clients for three platforms. any third party LL is working with should give each platform the same priority LL gives them or LL shouldnt be doing business with them. unless they are and it just shows the dedication LL really has to a linux client.

sorry if i sound a little pissed. i am tired of having to go back to windows every time LL decides to put something in the other clients and leave the linux client out in the cold till they get around to it.

They said that the voice would only be available for the newer higher priced islands so you will probably see a broadly adopted alternative come along such as being offered a teamspeak link when you get to an island or land parcel.
