From release to release I have seen this "feature" on and off. When I click on a panel or door, there are a number of mushroom like things red or blue floating up from the item I just touched.
I imagine it is a debug feature I can turn off from the menu, but have not been successful at either getting a screen shot or making this "feature" turn off and stay off.

That's "Show Updates". If you have your debug menus on (ctrl-alt-shift-D), you'll find it under "Client", keyboard shortcut "ctrl-alt-shift-U".
If I recall correctly, the colors of the poofs have meaning: Red is a full update, blue is a partial update, green is an object remove update.
