I am thinking of setting up linux on a new box. Is anyone having great success with the alpha client in any particular distro?
If you are having great success, what distro are you using?

opensuse 10.2 on two machines, minor annoyances on both of them, related to "rare earth hardware" on both of them (sound driver crashing die to f*cked laptop sound card on one, graphics freezes since i upgraded the graphics gards on the other) which are unlikely to bite you.

Runs wonderful on gentoo, except that I don't get any additional eye-candy by using windlight. But I guess that's merely because of my hardware (Laptop with ATi Mobility Radeon 9600 or something) than because of the distro.

Sabayon

Works (incl. movies) out of the box and very fast :)

Also tried it with Mint 4.0. Out of the box as well.

And the fun part is, that on the same pc, i have about 30% better framerate with linux than with windows.

I'm using ubuntu 8.04 alpha and have tried the regular alpha client, Windlight, and Dazzle and all three work great. I don't do voice chat so I can't say how well that works, but everything else that is supposed to work works really well.

I'm using Gentoo on 3 machines, 2 Core Duo and a AMD64 x2. I always use the latest Windlight Client when possible, Voice works only on one machine yet (Soundblaster Live, Alsa, Pulseaudio).
My GPUs: Geforce 7900 GT, 7600 GT, 8400 M.

SL works like a charm, you should know what you are doing, as always with Gentoo...^^

Cheers,
Torrid

Works fine for me in Ubuntu 7.10.
Actually.. it works much better in Linux than it does in XP on this computer.

I've got SL running in Mandriva 2008 (on x86_64 even, though I had to install a few i586 libraries).

Ubuntu .. Hardy Heron Development release( The daily build will keep you current)
Running speedily on this :)(Both Kubuntu-kde4 & Gnome-ubuntu)

Gutsy also runs fine, & like the post above. runs much better on Linux than Wind0ws for me..

Debian Sid - Sidux

I have SL running on Debian Sid here (actually installed from the Sidux live-CD) and SL works like a charm. I haven't tried voicechat yet, so I don't know if that works.

I have a bit an older PC (Pentium IV, 2,4 Ghz) with only 512 Mb memory, so I have to take care which window-manager I use or SL will take too much resources. I have ran SL succesfully with Enlightenment and XFCE4. KDE and gnome are too heavy on system resources for me to have SL run smoothly. But with XFCE4 I can even run SL with Compiz-fusion running. Love that!

Graphics card: nvidia Geforce IV, which is too old to be able to run the Windlight client, alas.

my spec is very similar to yours, but 2.8 P4 and 1GB ram ... I havn't tried XFCE4 but you've just planted a seed, its a pain disabling compiz everytime i want SL, I'm going to try it for sure. thanks for the heads up . :)
