Freeze not OpenGL related?

LL have always blamed the recurrent client freezes (which lock my computer totally, I have to reboot) on the OpenGL drivers from ATI. But how can they be the cause, when I'm often freezing even before logging in, long before 3D rendering has begun? Sometimes even before the webpage has been rendered, directly after starting the client.
Even more: These freezes seem related to grid load. During off-peak hours I seldom freeze.
My constantly freezing SL client on Windows, requiring hard resets, caused my NTFS filesystem to be corrupted beyond all scandisk repair attempts. Linux ext3 is less fragile, but I'm still constantly worried over all these required hard resets.
Is anybody at LL even analyzing all these crash reports?

I used to have an ATI 9250 card in my computer. Before I started SL, I used the stock driver from OpenSUSE (version 10.2) and had zero problems with it. After I installed the ATI proprietary driver (required to run SL) I had so many lockups I decided to dump the ATI and get an NVIDIA (GeForce 7300 GT).
That system freezing is part of the ATI experience. My computer would freeze randomly at any time, and as for running SL, I needed a fresh reboot between online sessions. If I didn't do that, SL would freeze the computer the second time I tried to run it.
There's only so much LL can do about the crappy quality of ATI graphics drivers. I suggest dumping that card and getting a nice NVIDIA. The support (and drivers) are vastly superior, regardless of the OS you're using.

If you have a Radeon 9250 or earlier, use the open source drivers. They're stable and they work.
I use the open source R300 drivers with my Radeon X800, and they *mostly* work. They're not as fast as they could be (I dont' get frame rates that are much better than with a 9250), and occasionally (rarely) I get hard lockups on the system which are very annoying. It sounds like the open source R300 drivers may be more reliable than the ATI ones....

I know... Got a 9200 a few months ago, on a desktop computer (upgraded to a Nvidia 7600 GT since, and I'm more than happy with it !). But the computer I am using at my other place is a notebook (without any possibility to change the graphic chipset) and got a Mobility 9700... The open sources R300 drivers are not available for my version of Xorg (6.8.2), and I'm not ready to upgrade the distro I use (Mandrake 10.2) to a newer one, because of all the customization work (and custom RPM packages) I made for the 10.2 and that would require many days of work to port to the newest distros...
So I'm stuck with ATI provided fglrx drivers...

I had the same sort of hangs in Linux using the opensource radeon driver (ATI Radeon mobility M6 LY - same as R100). Fortunately the linux is robust enough and didnt corrupt the filesystem after dozens of crashes. I ended the hangs by disabling the (all) optional opengl extensions in the launch script.

I have an Ati Radeon 9250 card too. Where can i find those more stable/better opensource drivers? I can't even see Windlight when using the Windlight viewer because of the crappy drivers
