Persistent crash while loading

So I'm at something of a standstill trying to get Second Life to work. I solved the "Window creation error," but now the application crashes on loading, every time, with the following error:

Second Life appears to have crashed.

I'm running Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake), but I can't say much else, other than the machine's an HP Pavilion about three years old, with a decent processor speed and 512 MB RAM. I'm not a geek, and I don't know how to do much without dredging the Ubuntu documentation -- I'm just glad to be free from Windows and all the viruses and worms and spyware and incredibly inefficient architecture that sucks all my machine's resources.

But I would like to run Second Life and see what it's about. :)

Incidentally, on the advice of someone in the Ubuntu Forums, I toggled every commented command line in the Second Life shell, but the results were the same every time.

I would suggest upgrading to Edgy Eft 6.10

I tried for a while with Dapper Drake to no avail. I followed the upgrade procedures at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EdgyUpgrades and then from there I used the Envy script for installing my nVidia Driver. http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

You did not mention whether or not you are using nVidia or something else so I hope this helps.

Dapper Drake (6.06) is fine. Please post your ~/.secondlife/logs/SecondLife.log and ~/.secondlife/logs/stack_trace.log files after one of these failed runs so we can try to figure out the problem.

I didn't see those files in the folder, and I ran a search of the entire hard drive, and nothing turned up.

For me, I reread the README file and started playing with the open GL settings. And have had success. Good luck.
