SL with Exceed

Is it possible to run SL over Hummingbird Exceed or anthoer PC X-server?

Is the SL viewer running on Linux? Then, maybe. If Linux SL uses X, then just set your DISPLAY variable to the PC. If not, then no.

Um... no.

You see, SL uses OpenGL, which is rendered through X. If your X11 server doesn't support OpenGL (which is most Windows X11 servers I've seen), you're going to be using Mesa and that's software (not hardware) rendering. If you're trying to render it remotely (that's network latency there, you're lagging before you even open the xterm to run SL!), and you somehow succeed with a decent frame rate, ether you're extreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeemly lucky to get it to run at all or you're running locally and "remote" is really through UNIX sockets, not TCP/IP.

In other words, ether you're fooling yourself, it'll fail (NoMachine and VNC are in this category) or it's going to look like crap.

If you want to run SL remotely, get a high-resolution digital video camera, something bigger than the screen's resolution. Aim it at the screen, and feed full rez data to another PC to stream it to your remote PC. Code up a remote keyboard/mouse utility to control the system like you were there.

Or do what I did, and get a laptop that's beefy enough to run SL by itself.

ive been playing with running it on a LTSP network and had some small successes, Ive upgraded a term so it has a decent geforce card in, but its only got a 200mb cpu so while SL now runs, it runs at 1 fps. next step when i get time it to see what happens with a fatter thin client
