SOCKS does not work

I have an SSH based SOCKS proxy on the network, which I'll have to use as since I asked to be on the alpha I moved location and am now on a different network :( Unfortunately the SOCKS option does not seem to work neither on the Linux nor Windows client (so I guess this is the wrong forum for it). At least I see no outbound connections to the SOCKS server I named.

I have exactly the same problem.

I'm on a very restrictive university network, so have set up a SSH SOCKS tunnel out of it.

This works wonderfully for other applications (e.g. Thunderbird (yes, the uni blocks port 110) and Azureus), but for SL no communication seems to get through at all.

There are several programs which should "socksify" any application to work (e.g. runsocks and tsocks), but I cannot get either to work.

This makes me sad :(

what ports does SL use, and what ports do you have the SSH tunnel forwarding ?

i usually use ssh with the -D option for doing this sort of thing.

Have you tried the Kernel Socks Bouncer?

Also, check to see if the SSH Socks can tunnel UDP.

Yeah it turns out SSH -D doesn't support UDP. Dante does though, but I couldn't make that work either. The socksification tools on Linux really suck quite badly.

Too much messing around for my liking, will just play with SL again in the holidays. It's probably just as well I can't log on here, got a degree to do :)

Sorry to revive an old topic :)

I've tried multiple SOCKS implementations to test with SL and all of them complain that SL is sending bad data, so it appears that SL isn't very SOCKS compliant :) Both Nylon and Dante complain that they can't negotiate connections with SL.

Does anyone know of any SOCKS implementation that works with SL?

(I'm using SL version: "1.10.0 (32) May 23 2006 14:21:53" on a G5)
