I cant get the client to actually load. I did chmod all the files for full access, but I still get the following wall of text:

From: someone

root@Hades:~/SL# bash secondlife
Running from /home/ashton/SL
Error setting value: No database available to save your configuration: Unable to store a value at key '/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/secondlife/command', as the configuration server has no writable databases. There are some common causes of this problem: 1) your configuration path file /etc/gconf/2/path doesn't contain any databases or wasn't found 2) somehow we mistakenly created two gconfd processes 3) your operating system is misconfigured so NFS file locking doesn't work in your home directory or 4) your NFS client machine crashedand didn't properly notify the server on reboot that file locks should be dropped. If you have two gconfd processes (or had two at the time the second was launched), logging out, killing all copies of gconfd, and logging back in may help. If you have stale locks, remove ~/.gconf*/*lock. Perhaps the problemis that you attempted to use GConf from two machines at once, and ORBit still has its default configuration that prevents remote CORBA connections - put "ORBIIOPIPv4=1" in /etc/orbitrc. As always, check the user.* syslog for details on problems gconfd encountered. There can only be one gconfd per home directory, and it must own a lockfile in ~/.gconfd and also lockfiles in individual storage locations such as ~/.gconf
Warning: Did not register secondlife:// handler with GNOME: gconftool-2 failed.

Can anyone tell me what exactly is wrong? I noticed it's mad because it cant save in a Gnome directory, I guess that's because I'm running KDE instead...?///

[...] If you have stale locks, remove ~/.gconf*/*lock.[...]

I'd try that first.
On the command line, this would tranlsate to
rm -i ~/.gconf*/*lock

Oh, and don't run Second Life as root.

"secondlife: line 108: arch: command not found"

Try changing "arch" in line 108 to "uname -m".

ok, it's technically running (and only reason I was running it as root before is bc I thought "well if it crashes under user, maybe root will give it more leniency and let it run" I ran it in usermode and it laoded the client this time... but... exact same as running windows client under WINE (from my post in the windows forum:

Lots of things piling up now. I *DID* connect to the grid, but let me get to that..

I start SL, and I get an error that my sustem does not meet the requriements...

2.97ghz CPU
1gb RAM
128mb VRAM

Wow this game must have VERY strenuous requriements! *rolls eyes*

Once I connect I'm greeted with this:
http://furstar.net/FH_pics/SL_error.jpg

My Avi has holes in it and it has a few extraneous parts it shouldn't have (looking almost to me like support wires on a manaquin) when it moves it's arm like 3/4 of the arm vanishes as well...

The game is VERY slow, probably like 1-4FPS, so I told it to go into full-screen mode.

SL crashes.

Any suggestions on what is wrong and what to do? (and I dont want to hear "buy a new PC!" that's not an option (though I'm planning to get a new laptop, but is a 2.97ghz processor with 1gb ram is not in-spec, I doubt a laptop will come NEAR it...)

-----

I might add that I played SL before with a 64mb Geforce card (that died) sometime in the past on this same PC and it worked nicely, so I'd think the PC itself is within spec... though this was before a lot of hte upgrades to the world, so...

EDIT:
Videocard is a PCI Radeon 9250 with 128mb onboard RAM

You might want to try different Graphic Card drivers (if you were using the proprietary ones, the free ones, and vice versa). Also make sure you've got the latest version of the drivers.

according to http://secondlife.com/support/sysreqs.php your system seems to be within spec. ...

[edit]
And if you have any Desktop effects active, disable them.

low fps can be caused by a lot of reasons: server side, client side; on client side it can be caused by harware issues and/or software issues. And interactions, of course.

Just some random thoughts:

With my lagtop (intel core duo 2,2ghz, 2gb ram, pcie ati radeon xpress 1100 128M; kubuntu 8.04 kde 3.5.whatever ) i get in an empty sim or a skybox about 20 fps, 10fps meeting some friends in a sim with not too much architecture and 1-4 fps at a crowded party or a sim with loads of textures. With my desktop PC (1-core amd 64, 2,2 ghz, 1gb ram, nvidia 7600gt agp 512M; 32-bit kubuntu 8.04 kde 3.5) i get about 55 in the skybox, 20-28 meeting the friends and 8-10 at the party.

With the newer SL clients not very often anymore, but sometimes, the framerate drops dramatically no matter where i am, which is for me the sign to clear the texture cache.

Of course the better you set rendering quality the lower the framerate gets, about graphic settings you can learn a lot by watching Torleys tutorial.

Well, your framerate also drops if you have more processes running than absolutely necessary - you could have a look whether you (e.g.) really need mysql and apache running while playing SL, or torrent or whatever eats nicetime and/or network bandwith.

Hope the one or the other helps deciding what to do .

:)Armin

Turned off everything I can except possibly some advanced desktop settings (would like to turn of plasma but cant find a checkbox...) only boosted me 1fps at best, still unusable... guess I'm stuck waiting for a faster PC -_- maybe when I finally get that quad-core 2gb/core desktop with 4gb RAM, I *might* have the requiremetns to run SL....

well, just have a look at the requirements: http://secondlife.com/support/sysreqs.php
and you'll find out that the weak point in your system is your graphics card. There is a section with recommended hardware for the linux client, too.

Edit:
er and: ... don't run SL as root. To give all files needed the proper rights as normal user make sure to chmod 'rooted' files in ~/.secondlife , too.

Ohhhhh KDE4

Go to kde's system settings > Desktop > Desktop effects and make sure Enable Desktop Effects is UNchecked (you might have to log off KDE and back in)

I have noticed a bug on my computer whenever two programs use openGL, the second program started runs like crap. KDE 4's Desktop Effects use openGL and of course is the first openGL started.

BTW you don't want to stop Plasma.... Plasma is what runs your desktop, taskbar, and etc...

Desktop effects was already turned off... looks like untill I can afford to upgrade (system or card) I wont be playing SL, since I jsut got an eee for work on the road I dont expect to have the $$$ to splurge on a new desktop anytime soon... (and I have this funny feeling the eee cant run SL ;))

and did NOBODY read this:

Which was more than 3 times to often. One shouldn't ever run SL as root any more than minus pi times :p
SCNR;)
