/me is horrified!

The viewer used to work (1.17.0.12) then i went away and now can't start it anymore, not even using the latest viewer and after clearing cache.

Here's the dump. Any ideas or should I just give up and put this down as a total waste of time?

I'm having the exact same problem... I'm gonna try re-downloading it, but who knows if it'll help...
If anyone knows what's going on here, enlightenment would be greatly appreciated!

UPDATE: Nope.. same results. here's the terminal dump from when I hit Connect...

Can anyone tell me what the "WARNING: signal_handlers: *** Caught signal 11" means? I'm guessing this is the problem... Not a dev though so I'm probably wrong...

Locked out :(

SL release: 1_17_3_0
Distro: FC 5, kernel 2.6.20-1.2320
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS

Thor, generally, signal 11 means "End yourself, NOW". This signal one sends to a process that is supposed to end itself immediately. Though in this case am not sure what is causing this signal to be issued.

--

Am desparate too, version 1_13_3_2 was the last one fully working for me. Then, version 1_17_0_12 worked at first but later not. Versions 1_17_2_0 and 1_17_3_0 don't work at all. :( I receive similar errors as Thor, and the client just crashes every time I execute SL after a few seconds.

I have been using the Linux clients since last year, without any major obstacles. Is this over now? Is my graphics card no longer supported? I start missing SL.

Erm, JeanLuc, you're mistaking 11 (SIGSEGV) for 9 (SIGKILL). The one you described is 9 (SIGKILL).

A signal 11 (SIGSEGV) can be described as "you tried to access memory that's invalid for you", often because the memory itself doesn't exist, or because the program tried to violate the process space boundaries usually set by the kernel.

Thanks Katrina for pointing that out. Sorry Thor for confusing you further.

I knew about signal 11 from the situation where one manually triggers it via the kill command (as a last resort to get a healthier end of a process than the one caused by signal 9). Lesson learnt, I know now what one is actually simulating by doing that: a segmentation violation (which in turn is followed by a predefined manner to end the process).

Katrina, any idea what is causing the SEGV? Anything a mortal Linux user can do something about?

A SEGV can have many, many causes. Basically, somehow the code asks the system "I want to access memory X", and the system replies "no, you cannot". Then the program, by default, bails out.

The triggering even can be really anything. A JPG that says "I'm 10K long", and the code that tries to examine the entire JPG data, only to discover that the file is actually corrupt, that past the 4th KB, there's no more data, and it's trying to access a private region of the stack/heap. Or a garbage collector trying to free up more memory that has been created when it was needed, thus trying to destroy data structures that are STILL in use somewhere. Or trying to read/write past the boundaries of a buffer, or an array, or a structure: you have a vector with N elements, and one of your functions want to read the N+1th element.

I guess that we could know MUCH more about this serious signal (even if trapped, it shows an extremely pathological, and often unsolvable, condition in the states machine), if we could know the content of the file:

/home/${USER}/.secondlife/logs/stack_trace.log

which is produced exactly for the reason to describe/explain what went wrong! ;)

Interesting. Very, very rough first interpretation: it seems like your viewer is building the interface (actually, the llmozlib is trying to), and enumerating the available fonts. Then something goes wrong with the font system, and it tries to free up memory in its font cache. But the memory freed violates some segment.

The link "unicode.ttf" you have in your main viewer directory, points to a valid font? Or it's a dangling link? What's the content of the fonts directory in your viewer dir? How it's your fontconfig configured?

Hi Katrina

"unicode.ttf" turned out to be a broken link. The directory /usr/share/fonts/truetype does not exist. Then I looked for true type fonts elsewhere and found these:

/usr/share/fonts/bitstream-vera/VeraSe.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/bitstream-vera/VeraBI.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/bitstream-vera/VeraMoIt.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/bitstream-vera/Vera.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/bitstream-vera/VeraMoBd.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/bitstream-vera/VeraMoBI.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/bitstream-vera/VeraMono.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/bitstream-vera/VeraIt.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/bitstream-vera/VeraBd.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/bitstream-vera/VeraSeBd.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/timesbi.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/ariblk.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/timesi.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/verdanai.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/trebuc.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/verdanaz.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/l_10646.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/georgia.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/arialbd.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/comic.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/arial.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/verdanab.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/courbd.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/times.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/tahomabd.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/georgiab.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/trebucbd.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/wingding.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/ariali.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/symbol.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/couri.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/trebucit.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/cour.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/lucon.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/comicbd.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/georgiai.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/arialbi.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/tahoma.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/micross.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/trebucbi.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/andalemo.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/verdana.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/impact.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/timesbd.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/webdings.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/courbi.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/webcore/georgiaz.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/japanese/TrueType/sazanami-mincho.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/japanese/TrueType/sazanami-gothic.ttf
/usr/share/X11/fonts/TTF/luximbi.ttf
/usr/share/X11/fonts/TTF/luxisbi.ttf
/usr/share/X11/fonts/TTF/luximri.ttf
/usr/share/X11/fonts/TTF/luxisri.ttf
/usr/share/X11/fonts/TTF/luximb.ttf
/usr/share/X11/fonts/TTF/luxirr.ttf
/usr/share/X11/fonts/TTF/luximr.ttf
/usr/share/X11/fonts/TTF/luxirbi.ttf
/usr/share/X11/fonts/TTF/luxisr.ttf
/usr/share/X11/fonts/TTF/luxirb.ttf
/usr/share/X11/fonts/TTF/luxirri.ttf
/usr/share/X11/fonts/TTF/luxisb.ttf
...
(and a few more that belong to applications)

So the closest match seemed to be /usr/share/fonts/japanese/TrueType/sazanami-mincho.ttf (no idea if it is actually anything comparable to the originally linked "kochi-mincho.ttf";). Just to give it a shot I linked unicode.ttf to the sazanami one. But the viewer is still crashing. :-/
And on a glance, the stack_trace.log looks the same.

SecondLife_i686_1_17_3_0/fonts:
MtBdLfRg.ttf
MtBkLfRg.ttf
profontdoc.txt
profontwindows.ttf
Readme.txt

That's all.

Got curious and checked through all the previous SL installations - they all had this broken link and I could use SL back then. So by right this TTF should not be that crucial.

Fontconfig? Is it this one: /etc/fonts/fonts.conf ? It is a rather lengthy XML file. Looking for anything in particular? I haven't dealt with it before. Generally, 99% of my installed stuff has been done via FC5 suited RPMs (SL is just one of the very few exceptions I could not install the _clean_ way). Hence, I usually do not (need to) crack my brain much over hardcore things - bear with me. :]

Yes. You just confirmed me that everything is as it should, at least apparently. I run out of ideas. I fear you should wait for Tofu (as busy as he is...).

Or better yet open a Jira ticket with all the relevant info you relayed to me, especially the stack trace. Good luck!

Thanks for trying. Appreciated.

Well, at least we could sorta establish that it is not a minor thing that I ought to be able to fix myself.

Did you guys do any package updates to your operating system between the time it was working and the time it started crashing. Maybe glibc or something?

new releases didn't fix it
07-12-2007 09:21
SL release: 1_18_0_6
Distro: FC 5, kernel 2.6.20-1.2320
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS

Update: The latest releases 1_17_3_1 and 1_18_0_6 didn't solve the problem.

Brian: My current glibc version is 2.4-11. Originally FC5 comes with 2.4-4, so yes it has been updated at some point. But not lately, I believe.

finally

Another update in this threat (yes I am still around, amazingly).
The following versions did not work for me as well:
1_18_1_2 and
1_18_2_1

Now finally version
1_18_3_5
kinda works! It's like the early days when I joined ..just graphics - without audio. So yes, that's still one thing that isn't correct. Seemingly audio related errors are these:

...
2007-10-02T17:37:36Z INFO: LLAudioEngine_FMOD::init() initializing FMOD
2007-10-02T17:37:36Z INFO: init: Trying ESD audio output...

2007-10-02T17:37:36Z INFO: init: Trying OSS audio output...
2007-10-02T17:37:36Z WARNING: OSS audio output FAILED to initialize: Error initializing output device.
2007-10-02T17:37:36Z INFO: init: Trying ALSA audio output...
2007-10-02T17:37:36Z WARNING: ALSA audio output FAILED to initialize: Error initializing output device.
2007-10-02T17:37:36Z WARNING: Overall audio init failure.
2007-10-02T17:37:36Z WARNING: idle_startup: Unable to initialize audio engine
...

Note: Audio definitely used to work for version 1_17_0_12 and prior. Same hardware, no changes here. Could there be a conflict with something else using audio? No clue

Not sure what's going on. Earlier today I could not get SL running at all (tried several times). Suspecting it has to do with Audio I disabled AudioStreamingMusic in .secondlife/user_settings/settings_default.xml. Another, most likely unrelated change: I made sure my video RAM was set to 512 instead of 256. And voila! My SL client started up. Once running I enabled Audio Streaming ..and it worked!

Update on 1_18_3_5
10-21-2007 11:18
Meanwhile I had plenty time to test further with version 1_18_3_5. A pattern has emerged:

- If I launch SL via Nautilus (GUI file browser) it never works, no matter how often I try.

- If I run SL manually from a terminal window it consistently crashes the first time and works the the second time

- Audio works fine and does not seem to be the culprit after all (disproving my initial suspicion)
