Any ideas? At no point do I get any sort of output other than the above, btw.

Weird that the whole message "Unable to create window, be sure screen is set at 32-bit color in Control Panels->Display->Settings" returns nothing on a search.
But if you do a search on the forums for "32-bit color", you will find multiple threads with the same problem.

I was told to re-install my drivers for my video card...which led to black screens and lockups

You really need to add more info:

What graphics card do you have?
What driver are you using?
What is the contents of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?
How did you uncompress the SL archive?

SL works fine on Debian, so there must be something odd (or not correctly set up) about your system. Without the above info, it is very hard to help at all. Also, it is expected that you will have searched the forums (and the wiki) and tried to solve the problem for yourself first.. If you have done this, it is only sensible (and polite) to say what you have already tried...

Don't worry if you are a newbie: people here are glad to help.. Just try to give as much info as you can in your OP.

I am running Kubuntu Dapper 6.06, I have been running Linux for a couple of years and know just a little.

I have exactly the same problem that I run ./secondlife and it crashes out as below:

2006-06-29T12:38:02Z INFO: createContext: creating window 800x600x32
2006-06-29T12:38:02Z INFO: createContext: window creation failure. SDL: Couldn't find matching GLX visual

2006-06-29T12:38:02Z WARNING: LLWindowManager::create() : Error creating window.
2006-06-29T12:38:02Z WARNING: Unable to create window, be sure screen is set at 32-bit color in Control Panels->Display->Settings
2006-06-29T12:38:02Z INFO: remove_marker_file()

I had a look in xorg.conf and it is actually set to:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "NVIDIA Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400]"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 1
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 4
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 15
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection

This might explain why it does not work, I have gone to settings/display and I cannot change the depth as far as I can see.

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks

constant trouble w/linux client
06-29-2006 06:35
I try repeatedly to run on the linux client. So much trouble, and seems wierd since the entire system they built is around one of the linux kernels, isnt' it? anyway... good luck on the video portion.... I get same message and can't get past it...

please can everyone confirm they have the nvidia driver (not nv) installed and selected in xorg.conf (or whatever the ATI equivalent is)? Also that you have the line

load "glx"

in xorg.conf..

Um, I've poked around a bit and it looks like it's using 24 bit color, that might be the problem
I'll poke around some more and see if I can't figure out how to change it.

Random note: Error messages really ought not talk about the windows fix...

No 24 bit colour is correct. It must be something else.

That error happens, its almost always either your default bit depth, or you need to load your glx driver for your card.. if its nvidia, its nvidia-glx, if its ati, its ati-glx..

Then, you need to enable it.. there should be a tool.. for nvidia its called nvidia-glx-config.. ati has similar naming..

Is what SL is complaining about is the frame buffer. The frame buffer must be 32 bit to accomidate alpha channels and what not, BUT for display linux rarely uses anything over 24 bit because what is the point of using those 8 bits of alpha channel on your screen? So be sure your system is properly mapping a 24bit screen to a 32bit framebuffer. SL talks with the frame buffer not the screen.
